Tumblr porn ban

Finally I have the inspiration for my official mumsnet Terf name. Just read a news item about Tumblr. Apparently they are banning adult content. Which includes any pictures showing genitals or female presenting nipples according to one comment I read.

What exactly are female presenting nipples? Do they need to be wearing little bows or something? How can you tell whether a set of nipples are ‘presenting female’? What if they are nipples that at the time of the picture were presenting female but are now presenting male? Or vice versa? Would it be offensive to keep showing pictures of nipples that have changed their mind?

Some big questions here. And that’s without getting into the comments complaining that porn on tumblr is good for women...

How peculiar. So they're presumably okay with pictures of female breasts as long as the nipples are covered. But male nipples are fine. Unless the male nipples are female presenting, whatever that means. What if the nipples belong to a woman wearing trousers and no make-up, if being female is now about 'presentation'? Confused

Hmmm. I have a rarely-used Tumblr account. I wonder if I could get away with posting a picture of my breasts, as long as I insisted that I identify as male? Would that make them “male presenting” nipples?

Seems like a pretty suicidal move from Tumblr. The place is about 90% smutty fan art, which according to the BBC article I read will also be banned.

I hope you've educated yourself about nipple presentation, nipple expression and nipple identity being three very different things. Else I'll have to call you a bigot.

LangCleg · 04/12/2018 09:46

Also, since Manchester Pride decreed that the saggy-titted among us weren't proper women, are nipples belong to saggy tits allowed?

This is something I may need to know.

(belonging)

Check out raindovemodel on insta - they put a pic up showing their breasts / nipples and said they don’t identify as female so they shouldnt have the post removed. - not sure what the final outcome was , but a google search brings up the post / comments.

Tumblr being the best sm site for sharing both text and pictures (that you don't have to have created yourself), makes it a very popular place for young fan communities.

The weird crossover between teenage girls' fan fiction and hardcore, misogynist pornography has had, I reckon, a very harsh impact on many a young girl's latent fantasies.

I actually wish them well implementing this ban and hope one day a young girl can stare dreamily at a pic of Harry Styles without thinking it would be the height of romance for him to be choking her!

femalepresentingnipples · 04/12/2018 10:15

When did Manchester pride make that announcement? Entertaining to discover that my lactating breasts mean I’m not a real woman.

Actually you make a good point about the difference between identity and presentation. So my concern about what happens when the nipple owner’s identity changes is unnecessary since they say it’s about presentation. Except I’m not sure that you can ‘present’ without using some sort of accessories. So a naked breast can’t really be said to have a gender presentation. Unless as I suggested little bows are added. Or moustaches for the male nipples presumably.

Glosswitch comments on a piece in The Atlantic bemoaning the loss of Tumblr as a home for sexual sub-cultures that don't always thrive elsewhere :

It would be great if people bemoaning the limitations on freedom caused by reducing the availability of porn could stop to consider the impact the proliferation of porn has had on the freedom of women and girls

Basic freedoms - feeling safe in your body, safe to walk down the street, free to grow breasts and body hair, free from expectations of submission - are lost in a world where objectification and female pain are normalised

I posted this BBC response to the tumblr ban on the BBC misogyny thread:
it’s a corker.

’Tumblr's porn ban abandons the marginalised’
Hmm

So some poor mod is going to have to sit there assessing whether the nipples are masculine or feminine? The mind boggles. I'd have been tempted to go for equality and banned all nipples and genitals.

ChattyLion · 09/12/2018 06:42

Ugh that piece in the Atlantic that Glosswitch comments on is appalling.
The writer references ‘child-porn’. And ‘a porn ban’. Not: ‘images of child sexual abuse’ or ‘images of children being raped’? It is shocking.

‘Tumblr’s decision was partly motivated by a large child-porn problem. You can see why rather than pay for the expensive work of patrolling the age of people in porn, the company would simply want to overcorrect. But its adult content wasn’t strictly limited to porn. The site is—was—a haven for people who might not be able to connect sexually in other ways.’

Oh the poor poor oppressed wankers.

Goodness, that BBC report

That change means marginalised people, those who are all-too-used to being ostracised in their offline lives, now face it in their online space too. Some of the internet’s most-needed communities are now homeless.

It's like life didn't exist pre-internet.Hmm
