There's some surprisingly good feminist messaging!

  1. Women in charge - Shank in Slaughter Race and Yes in charge of algorithms
  2. Women get stuff done - the role of the Princesses (no spoilers Grin)
  3. Woman wants to pursue her dream and the party line is that she's perfectly justified in doing so.

Also, man who's trying to be controlling in a big way comes to the realisation that it's not a good way to be and voluntarily changes his behaviour, even though it hurts him to do so. Not sure that's feminist but nice to see.

Check it out!

I have just got back in from watching it with DS 11. I loved the strong female characters and the princesses made some good points. I asked DS if he noticed anything different in that film to usual cartoons and he didnt mention anything about the female/male issue but did say there wasnt really a hero and eveyone was kind of the same in that none of them were perfect and theu all learnt something which I think was kind of true.

Sounds like it's worth a punt.

DH and DD went to see it together while I relaxed. Grin

They thought is was great and had good messages about girls. DD loved how the princesses kicked arse. She repeated the bit about girls being 'saved' a lot.

i loved the first movie and was planning to take my 2 DS's to see this. you've just pushed it up my list of things to do!

I hadn't read this thread before we went this afternoon, but yeah it was really surprisingly charming!

My girls really liked the female characters at lot. Venelope really reminds me of my youngest, who is tiny and very cute looking and really loves vehicles and adventure. My oldest wants to be Yes, I think. Both of them want to hang out with Shank :)

I loved the friendship / love =/= control message.

I liked how Yes's look changed every 3 minutes or so too, without any comment whatsoever Grin

For someone who regularly reads the relationship boards, seeing a giant man roar at a clearly uncomfortable girl about how she's HIS FRIEND was actually genuinely uncomfortable viewing for me at times. The bit where she tries to just make it all better is heart-breaking too, because so many women/girls will do just that and it doesn't help....

I have probably overthought it all massively but thought this was a good place to discuss it if so!!

Haven’t seen the sequel yet but I loved the line ‘I’m not a glitch - I’ve just got pixlexia, okay?’ from the first movie.
