Feminist recommendations for Netflix?

Sorry, this is probably lighter than a lot of threads on here - does anyone have any feminist recommendations for Netflix? I'm sure I saw a recommendation for a documentary on here recently 🤔. Thanks.

Crazy ex girlfriend is a goodie, I think. It critiques feminism, and gender roles, quite nicely, as well as addressing a stigmatized mental illness. Nanette was very powerful. I think things like Line of Duty, and OUAT are good-female leads and villains, as is OITNB. I'd hate to watch anything about the porn industry, etc!

The Letdown was also very good, yes to the mental load etc. The women were their own people!

OMG the letdown! I found myself snorting with laughter throughout!

Crazy ex girlfriend is great. Great songs. Slightly overweight leading lady which makes a change.

13 reasons why is very good for feminism, also intersectional feminism. No one believed Hannah and she was white. Great line.

scepticalwoman · 01/12/2018 20:33

Op - you've encouraged me to watch Nanette again - just as an antidote to all the male entitlement and aggression so visible at the moment. Thank you

Ploverlover · 01/12/2018 20:45

Rachel Bloom isn't overweight! Just not skinny, and rather small with big boobs. Donna Lynne Champlin is a little, and I like that it's irrelevant to the plot/never an issue.

whatamessitallis · 01/12/2018 21:19

Thanks for reminding me, I want to watch she's beautiful when she's angry, I've heard it's great.

NibblyPig · 01/12/2018 21:47

If you haven't seen it, please watch Good Girls, its so good! I like Crazy Ex Gf too, but latest series isn't as good.

Prime Suspect is on there at the moment, oldie but a goodie. S3 especially, co-starring Peter Capaldi.

I am not an easy man - comedy where the sexist roles and stereotypes are reversed
No Men beyond this point- last man to be born lives in a world of women

Crazyhead
Wynonna Earp
Killjoys
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Godless

Plover I didnt think she was overweight either, but I read an article that said she was overweight. I've never been a good judge of size so I went with it. Probably doesnt help that she is next to Valencia and Heather a lot of the time.

Ploverlover · 01/12/2018 22:28

She gives her weight/height in an interview. Even if she was under reporting by a few pounds, her bmi is bang on normal, and most of it's likely boob. I think the show makes comment on her weight precisely because she is normal, unlike Valencia who is very slim.I

I hate it when TV women get called "overweight" at a bmi of 23+. Sorry, digression.

memaymamo · 02/12/2018 08:02

Thanks for the Nanette recommendation! I would never have clicked on that otherwise, but was glad I watched it.

TheMagician · 02/12/2018 08:48

It's awful isn't it that we now 'see' rebecca as fat because normal women don't get to be on tv. Josh was normal too if we're going to start looking at the men. Darryl has a tummy. Greg is the only one is slim, I think, but he always wore a lot of layers.

Jaffacakebeast · 02/12/2018 16:10

So I’ve just put episode 1 on of my crazy ex gf. I’m assuming Rebecca puts loads of weight on into season 4 because she is most definitely not fat 😵

Jaffacakebeast · 02/12/2018 16:11

If it’s this musical all they way though I’ll doubt I’ll find out tho

MrsTerryPratcett · 02/12/2018 16:16

Nappily Ever After. Funny and interesting about how black women are told to put so much of their value in their hair. The lead is great.

I like Jessica Jones too.

Ploverlover · 02/12/2018 18:26

Stick with the music! Give it two eps at least. Her weight does vary, but a quick eyeball guesstimate puts her at max bmi 25 even when she has gained weight mid season. The actress is obviously fit enough to do the dance routines. Our perception of body size is terrible, we see thin as normal on TV, and fat as normal in real life.

WhoTFIsAlanBrazil · 02/12/2018 18:29

Glow!

Jaffacakebeast · 02/12/2018 18:54

Our perception of body size is terrible!! I’m so glad I’m not a teenage girl dealing with this, was bad enough 20 years ago but it’s another level now

Ploverlover · 02/12/2018 19:01

Quote from Rachel: "What also has become apparent when I have to get clothes for these events is that I have a normal body. A lot of fashion houses are reluctant to lend clothes that aren’t in the sample sizes of 0 and 2, so it’s getting harder and harder for me to find clothes without buying them. That’s the whole problem with the fashion industry: My body size is literally normal and healthy, but when you put me next to a model, I look obese." She is described as "curvy" for being NORMAL and healthy.
