Counting Dead Women on Twitter

WhirlwindHugs · 25/11/2018 10:17

Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and @CountDeadWomen is naming women killed (in Britain) since last year every five minutes.

It's shocking anyway, but while I was very aware that many of these murders are committed by male partners, expartners, friends and colleagues - I've been shocked at how many of the murders mentioned so far were committed by a son or grandson.

It's a very powerful thing to see.

It gives you a sense of the scale of violence against women, as you say often by partners (or estranged partners) and by sons and grandsons. Or a bloke at work that offers to walk them home.

It's hard reading, I've been minded to Google a few of the women as they've been posted, and they're just like us (of course!) until one day a man decided to kill them.

I was at the Manchester event. Very moving. Many women there with framed photos of loved ones.

I hope we made a visual impact across the town centre.

I'll link any photos/videos if they are posted.

I’d never thought of it this way but I have actually known and worked with two women who were murdered. By men. And one man who murdered his wife - I knew him not her.

It wasn’t until I saw this thread that I collated them in my head like this. So yes. Theee female victims of male violence - two killed at the hands of a partner. One killed by a stranger.

Only one of them I knew reasonably well. The others were passing acquaintances. But when you put it together like this it’s shocking.

None of their murders were headline news outside of a paragraph in the local paper.

OlennasWimple · 25/11/2018 19:55

We all know the statistic about 2 women a week being killed by their partner but the personal stories really hit home

I can't imagine any other group being murdered at this rate in the UK and there not being an outcry about it

littlbrowndog · 25/11/2018 20:39

To us all who have lost a loved one at the violence of one who said they loved them
And the ones that actually loved them
🌷🌸💐🌹🌹🌹

Love to you whirlwind also 🌸🌼🌻

It has been heartbreaking oday, with Karen as well as Jean's twitter. Just so harrowing.

CorporeSarnie · 25/11/2018 20:48

I knew a murderer. He killed his wife after years of dv. I knew and feared him, as one of my bosses when I was a very young woman, he enjoyed making women afraid and worked in a job that allowed him access to vulnerable women. I shudder to think he is now free as he served his sentence. Their children will never be free of what he did. So glad to hear of all the brave women marching to honour those fallen.

Verify2Terrify · 25/11/2018 21:29

The sheer scale of male rage in the attacks on vast majority of those women - it's unbearable. I went through the whole list one by one & am just heartbroken at the images of women, full of life, who have been killed by men. Angry, violent, raging men.

Gileswithachainsaw · 25/11/2018 21:44

You hear and read about this statistic all the time on here.

Somehow feels so different and obviously so important to have their names and faces there for all to see.

Ages from.11 to 100. Really shows the scale of the problem.

Sorry to anyone whis lives have been devastated by the loss of all these women.

Awful to see.

:(

FloralBunting · 25/11/2018 21:58

I don't really have the words. The matter of factness about the murder and abuse of women by men staggers me. It's just wallpaper in our culture, background noise now. The slightest hint of women standing up to it, and it's impossible to sidestep the complaints of NAMALT.

Ereshkigal · 25/11/2018 22:10

I totally agree Floral.

Littl and whirlwind Thanks

GrinitchSpinach · 25/11/2018 23:21

It's just wallpaper in our culture

yep...

So much so that because I only knew her, but didn't live with her or know her really well, I don't think as often as I should of my classmate LB, who was murdered by an ex when we were 23...

I'm reading the names and stories of these women out to my husband tonight, in hopes that one man somewhere will get just an inkling of the constant threat under which we exist.

littlbrowndog · 25/11/2018 23:31

the use of the word domestic violence should stopped being used it makes it seem likevwas just a wee upset at home
Domestic violence is when I kick the vacuum cleaner
It should be called what it is
Men stabbing strangling burning hitting with hammers shooting with xbows beating women and girls to death
Not domestic violence
Male violence

sawdustformypony · 26/11/2018 12:13

'murder' is another very good word for it. So, why do some men commit murder and others don't ?
