Local all girls school

So I'm overseas right now

Happened to visit local girls school for an event

There was a toilet for men and a gender neutral toilet.

Inside the gender neutral toilet there were laminated signs telling us that the toilet was gender neutral to be inclusive and welcoming to trans persons and that the chance of trans persons assaulting females was vanishingly rare.

The little girls went off in search of a 'real girls toilet' as they put it.

I was disappointed that a girls school would do that

The sign really said the chance of trans persons assaulting females is vanishingly rare...?

That's not the point at all is it, it's about privacy, dignity, and about keeping any old boy out who fancies getting his camera phone over your cubicle or whatever. Not fear of being assaulted. That's the bar I now isn't it. Abolishing same-sex spaces with their myriad of all sorts of benefits is completely fine because you're unlikely to be assaulted.

Were they temporary signs just for the event as normally they only have girls toilets, being a single sex school?

Serfisafleur · 24/11/2018 11:30

"Gender neutral" just means Unisex, open to all men and all women and all trans. Unisex spaces also have benefits.

This idea that ppl are worried about being assaulted by trans people is a myth and very odd that a sign should say that. It's pretty transphobic actually.

Ideally there should be men's, women's and unisex options for everyone.

Absolutely

And why can't the boys toilet be gender neutral?

Let's face it either they are female to male in which case presumably they want to go to the boys (or are fine in the girls) or they are male to female in which case they can go to the boys since it's a girls school they are very likely to be the only person there anyway.

My nephew goes to a very left wing school they have turned some of the boys toilets to gender neutral, works well apparently.

Girls still have their own space.

I don't think I have ever felt so tempted to write on a toilet wall.

Purple no a wooden sign nailed to the wall, it was just a school show nothing fancy

purple I presume they are for the teachers or staff. You'll get men and trans teaching and working and visiting there.

It's the weird "being attacked" sign that's dodgy.

Serf yes lots of toilets is always a good idea

I was pretty shocked a girls school wasn't centering girls more though or couldn't see there might be any other reason why young girls didn't want to share a toilet with any unknown male TBH

The toilets were in a corridor outside the canteen and just along from the performance space and music practice rooms so quite central in students and a lot of visitors experience of the school.

The men can of course go to the still existing mens toilets though

I wonder how it would go down if there was a sign saying ‘black people welcome! The chances of being attacked by a black person are vanishingly rare.’ I’m guessing that wouldn’t go down too well, and I’m guessing any black person. Seeing that sign would immediately infer something about the person who thought it necessary to put it up. Of course the sign completely misses the point anyway, as nobody believes they are more likely to be attacked by a trans person, or indeed a black person, but as all evidence shows, a female person is far more likely to be attacked by a male person, trans identifyied male,or just a boring old pervy/violent bloke.

Bowlofbabelfish · 24/11/2018 15:37

“How rare is acceptable?”

Would be my question

Along with “why men’s and mixed sex if men are the ones attacking? Surely women’s and mixed sex is safer,”
