I thought you might like this: Academic paper links GNC with past lives as the opposite sex - stop the world I want to get off: twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/1063507469895417856

What a crock.

Somerville · 19/11/2018 15:33

OFFS.That's ridiculous.

Silentlyobserving · 19/11/2018 15:33

Yep, bit like the whole debate really

And the evidence for proving past lives is where exactly?

I am blaming my GC status on the fairies at the bottom of my garden. I knew the little bastards were trouble the first time I saw them dancing around the birdbath singing 'I am who I am'.

And the evidence for proving past lives is where exactly?

In the same filing cabinet as the one holding evidence that it is possible to be born in the wrong body?

In the same filing cabinet as the one holding evidence that it is possible to be born in the wrong body?

It's in the same vault as the Necronomicon

I know this because on my way back from this discovery I tripped over and stumbled into a portal where I found myself at the bottom of a shaft but was collected enough to observe that the slate slab underneath bore the inscription “HIC IACET ARTORIVS REX QVONDAM REXQVE FVTVRVS".

Sadly, however, the head injury that I received in the fall and my Batman Begins style of climb to escape that pit and shaft means that I can not, to my sorrow, recall the location of that vault.

Ha! I knew I was really Pope Innocent III.
Kiss my ring you bigots.

arranfan · 19/11/2018 16:36

Kiss my ring you bigots.

Excuse me but that makes you responsible for the papal bull annulling Magna Carta:

blogs.bl.uk/digitisedmanuscripts/2015/08/shameful-and-demeaning-the-annulment-of-magna-carta.html

You'll be a long time waiting for that kiss of the ring from me but obviously everyone is entitled to their choices in this matter Grin

Its not surprising that people have been able to get completely spoof 'papers' published if this is supposed to be a real one.

Peer review works pretty well for proper science but if your 'peers' are similarly deluded types, it doesn't really help much. Maybe this sort of topic should always have a reality check review of some sort?

ProfessoressWoland · 19/11/2018 16:46

To be fair, it says "phenomenon in which young children describe memories of a purported previous life"
But then: "Children who remembered a life involving a different natal sex were much more likely to exhibit GNC than children who remembered a same-sex life."
"Remembered" or "claimed to remember"?

Floisme · 19/11/2018 16:51

Really arranfan? That's distressing. Vatican history isn't one of my strong points but with a name like Innocent, I'd had him down as a kind of papal Gregory Peck.
Blush

arranfan · 19/11/2018 17:00

I'd had him down as a kind of papal Gregory Peck.

That is so much more charismatic and charming and a truly good fit for the name - let's maintain the fiction that your version is true. And I withdraw my reality (and the British Library artefact) in preference for yours. Grin

Floisme · 19/11/2018 17:03

I'm glad you agree because you seem like a decent sort and I don't really want to excommunicate you.

FekkoThePenguin · 19/11/2018 17:07

That is too funny. When I trained we learned how to do past life regressions - as a therapeutic tool, yes I know it’s not real! - and you never meet someone who used to be an accountant or tax man oh no.

All bloody cleopatra, centurions and Elizabeth 1. All very busy in the past life obviously l. People with far too vivid imaginations.

arranfan · 19/11/2018 17:07

I don't really want to excommunicate you.

My, how you've mellowed over the centuries, your Excellency. I am grateful for that clemency.

FekkoThePenguin · 19/11/2018 17:07

Oh and yes - someone tried it on me and I was..... no one.

VickyEadie · 19/11/2018 17:09

Yes, no-one was ever a child who died of measles in the middle ages at the age of 5.

AornisHades · 19/11/2018 17:14

Presumably all us GC types must have been witches then. Hoping the madness would stop before we got burned.

R0wantrees · 19/11/2018 17:17

It was interesting listening to Bob Withers on This Morning talk about how a high number young people who seek interventions for gender identity have a common 'script' about living in the woods with wolves.

The paper concludes,
"Results: Children who remembered a life involving a different natal sex were much more likely to exhibit GNC than children who remembered a same-sex life. Conclusions: After exploring potential explanations, we conclude that past-life memories represent a novel factor that may be associated with the development of GNC."

There may be other conclusions that the authors might consider here.

groundcontroltomontydon · 19/11/2018 18:33

Is spookology a science now?

Knicknackpaddyflak · 19/11/2018 18:34

A colleague who was a hypnotherapist once told me that while she went along with what initially appeared past life regressions during treatment sessions, when she worked through them they always turned out to be a kind of coded story that the person needed to understand or cope with something that had happened to them, or to meet a deep need. (And not necessarily major traumatic stuff, it was often what was deeply worrying or upsetting to a toddler, which to the adult when she helped them work through unpacking it, ended with 'is that all ?' ) Never consciously invented, the person genuinely believed it until they 'saw' through to the real issue underneath.

UpstartCrow · 19/11/2018 18:39

Past lives are as cromulent as Satanists or alien abductions.

Lacypants · 19/11/2018 18:43

Oi, I'm a Satanist!

VickyEadie · 19/11/2018 18:45

"Results: Children who remembered a life involving a different natal sex were much more likely to exhibit GNC than children who remembered a same-sex life. Conclusions: After exploring potential explanations, we conclude that past-life memories delusions represent a novel factor that may be associated with the development of GNC."

Fixed that for them.

@Knicknackpaddyflak - exactly, it’s like interpreting dreams. Some people do really believe it though!
