So I’ve just checked DS’s BMI on the NHS BMI calculator
www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/bmi-calculator/

I do this every 3 - 6 months as he’s been overweight in the past.

They’ve changed it and it now says - gender (at birth).
I mean great that they are measuring on birth not current gender but really?

Gender (at birth)
What a ridiculous statement.
Coming from the NHS, irresponsible.

GatheringHerBrows · 17/11/2018 15:31

You can click Contact us, then Give feedback about this website, to tell them what you think about this.

More conflation of sex and gender as usual.

VickyEadie · 17/11/2018 15:56

I've contacted them just now and told them what I think of their 'gender at birth' thing.

Wrathofjurgenklop · 17/11/2018 16:06

I've contacted them.

Wrathofjurgenklop · 17/11/2018 16:32

A year ago I wouldn't have noticed.

Six months ago if I'd noticed, I wouldn't have bothered.

Now when I see it.
I will challenge it.

UnWilly · 17/11/2018 16:38

Also just used Contact Us to alert them to the error on the page

I'm trying to adopt a rescue dog and the form asks me to fill in the "gender" of the dog and I am just going to write "female" and let it go because I really don't want to give her a reason to be angry at me, but if even dogs have genders instead of sexes now....

littlecabbage · 17/11/2018 17:30

Have emailed.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 17/11/2018 17:45

Wtf does 'gender at birth' mean? Surely if you buy the whole innate gender idea there is literally no way to tell what gender identity a newborn has? And if you mean 'gender assumed / imposed at birth' aren't you being oppressive? The options for newborns boil down to 'sex', 'I'm a bigot by genderisms own rules' or 'don't know'

UnWilly · 21/11/2018 12:37

It still say Gender at Birth, has anyone had a reply?

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 21/11/2018 13:11

I've contacted them to complain.

And like, wrath. Once, I would have let it go. Now I complain.

UnWilly · 21/11/2018 19:10

Looks like a reply posted here

So if I ID-ed as a bloke I wouldn’t be so fat? Hmmmm interesting.

AspieAndProud · 21/11/2018 19:24

Trust me, the dog won’t be angry.

Anyway shouldn’t the options be ‘dog’ or ‘bitch’?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/11/2018 19:25

Do dogs have gender? Can you write ‘cat’ or ‘monkey’?

theOtherPamAyres · 21/11/2018 20:33

A baby is neither masculine nor feminine at birth. It's a baby boy or a baby girl at conception, in utero and confirmed female or male upon arrival.

Are midwifes able to discern whether the baby is effeminate or tomboyish?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/11/2018 20:34

I dunno, DS came out in a Man U shirt, smoking a pipe...

GraceTheDisgrace · 21/11/2018 20:35

AspieAndProud ha! I meant the rescuer but the dog's opinion matters to me more tbh. I have never been able to bring myself to calling female dogs that, because it's been used about me by men in such nasty ways, but I suppose technically it ought to be.

newdocket · 22/11/2018 15:33

I complained about this and have had an email saying they are changing 'gender' to 'sex'.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 22/11/2018 15:39

That's great news, new.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 22/11/2018 15:40

I dunno, DS came out in a Man U shirt, smoking a pipe...

That must have been painful for you. The pipe bit, I mean.

MistOnTheWater · 22/11/2018 15:41

They shouldn't have changed it to gender in the first place - considering it's subjective. As an aside (and nothing to do with this), when dd was in yr4 she used to tell her classmates her dog was a bitch and then find it funny when the child told on her to a teacher, only for the teacher to tell the other child that dd was in fact correct. That made for a fun parents evening. Grin

AncientLights · 22/11/2018 15:45

It's so strange how we've become so very squeamish about the word 'sex'. I've just been reading some of the Brontë sisters' novels and they had no problem using the word sex 180 or so years ago.

On the BMI thing, bit of a derail sorry, the statistician who dreamt the whole thing up said it was not to be used for individuals, it was for populations only. More misappropriation.

MistOnTheWater · 22/11/2018 15:56

Populations only AncientLights? I'm not as thin as I thought then lol.

Seriously though, how can a baby have a gender? I don't have a gender and I'm an adult.

newdocket that's good to know.

UnWilly · 23/11/2018 18:51

Update on the thread I linked to, has been changed to sex
