Happy Gender Pay Gap Day

Copied from Pregnant Then Screwed - do share if you see it in fb/insta etc...

Morning lasses. I hope you have your feet up because from today you are working for free. In fact, many of you stopped being paid to work a helluva long time ago - if you're a woman of colour, a woman with a disability, or a mother, then you've been grafting your socks off for nowt for months! Equal Pay Day confuses the pretty little heads of many men. The day is based on the median average of all full time wages. How bloody depressing. Women are funneled into low paid jobs, judged for daring to own a uterus, left out of the beer drinking, bottom paddling old boys club and denied pay rises and promotions as we are seen as less competent and less committed.

So up your 🐽 to the patriarchy which leaves so many women dependant on men and in pension poverty, even daily poverty, while we care for the most vulnerable and do the hidden and domestic labour to keep society functioning.

We have changed all our social media pictures to this image for today and would love you to join us

Why don't we call it the Women's Pay Gap?

It would be far more accurate and plain-speaking to name the disadvantaged sex. I don't know why the word 'gender' crept in, or why its still there. At some stage we will need to stop following the herd, stop using 'gender' and talk about Women's Pay Gap.

JellySlice · 10/11/2018 10:57

Of course it's the Women's PayGap. What nonsense to call it gender paygap. Oooo, which gender? Is it the poor widdle masculine stereotypes that are being discriminated against, or the unicorns? No, it's the women, the adult female humans. FFS.

JellySlice · 10/11/2018 10:59

I guess GPG refers to the pay gap between the 'genders', ie the pay gap between the sexes. But the way English works 'sex pay gap' could mean something totally different!

Spanglylycra · 10/11/2018 11:25

Well at least someone is highlighting there is an issue never mind the name...

They previously got slagged off for today's artwork being too politically correct.(see below) I feel sorry for them they do some very good work.
It's an important issue and should be shouted about. There was a lot more attention on it last year when it fell on a working day, pretty quiet today.

I'm going to call it the "BornFemaleTax"

theOtherPamAyres · 10/11/2018 11:37

How much more effective that sign would have been had it used the word 'woman' instead of 'gender'.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 10/11/2018 11:42

But odd that it’s on a Saturday.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/11/2018 12:16

But odd that it’s on a Saturday.

No, it's determined by statistics, I think it's the day on which the median male full-time worker will have earned as much as the equivalent female will during the whole year.

I was having quite a good day until I read this. How is this still happening to women. Fuck the patriarchy.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 10/11/2018 14:08

It is an important issue but it's nothing to do with gender. If it was, Pips Bunce would be earning less on the days he turns up for work in a dress & makeup. It's about biological sex.

TeeJay1970 · 10/11/2018 14:20

On average men work 39 hours a week women work 34.

Deliriumoftheendless · 10/11/2018 14:37

Why do you think women work fewer hours? How much of that is down to childcare arrangements? Why don’t more men work part time and do the child related stuff?

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 10/11/2018 19:35

On average men work 39 hours a week women work 34 outside the home. Once unpaid work such as childcare, housework and caring for relatives is factored in, women work more and earn less than men.
