Apologies if this has already been mentioned AND for the fact I read it on paper and don’t know how to do links.

Letter in last weeks BMJ signed by a couple of GPs and a psychiatrist and a professor of obs and gynaecologist. It’s tesponding to another purse talking about transgender healthcare from the summer.

Highlights

  1. The proposed terminology misleads: biological sex is not “assigned” but determined at conception and observed at birth, whereas gender is a fluid, social construct.
  1. We disagree with the claim of Action for Trans Health that “the continued existence of gender identity clinics amounts to wilful abuse”
  1. Medical practitioners should follow a framework of evidence, not simply respond to clients’ expectations.

FANTASTIC

Number 2 looks like a masterly bit of understatement!

I think I saw that. It’s very encouraging!

We need more scientists/medical professionals to start taking apart the “assigned at birth” bullshit, that was one of the things that horrified me the most when I first leant about all of this, when I realised how far that vocabulary had entered into the language of the government, the NHS, the BBC.

That’s the letter I’m referring to seems my ability to search also not high today. That it was strange it hadn’t been mentioned already

Yes, that's definitely more impressive than a statement supported by 1600 scientists.

Actually, it is. It's a carefully thought-out, balanced, well-written letter from medics who really seem to care about transgender health, medical ethics, research, and sound health policy formulation.
I'd take that over a political letter any day.

Some people putting their head above the water. Well done!
