- a whole strange cute anime/furry/Hello Kitty/Kpop on one side and something very dark behind.

Just to reiterate: these things appeal to children BECAUSE they are cute and childlike. The very dark thing behind is the people who go to the things that children like and use it to access potential victims.

Parents do not need to worry about children because they are into cartoons, anthropomorphized animals, or KPop (or youth organisations like Guides). "Kawaii" is an understood term among most school age children, I've found. It's in the same bracket as unicorns, rainbows, llamas and reversible sequins on clothes.

They do need to be aware that the Internet allows children to wander all over the place in a virtual sense and run into people who may be specifically looking to target them. And those people gravitate to what kids like, because that's where the kids are.

Furries are probably more niche. Think adult kink.

But anime is quite popular. It’s cartoons/comics. Obviously not all anime is pornographic but the bad stuff is really just a wrong internet click away.

If your kids are into things like comics/cartoons/gaming I’d recommend keeping an eye out. If they are still young you can keep an eye on Internet.

DogMamma · 09/11/2018 11:27

@Danaquestionseverything

ARE YOU FOR REAL!!! WHY?! why would someone want to dress up as an animal to have sex? and whats the deal Anime? isnt that just asian comic book illustrations? is that something sexual now?

you would think i have been living under a friggin rock!....i assure you i havent haha

silentcrow · 09/11/2018 11:30

Yes, I agree, Pineapple - there's some wonderful anime and manga out there and we shouldn't ditch it all in fear. We do need to be aware that some of it looks like it's child-suitable but isn't.

For reassurance, lots of high school libraries stock manga and many of the librarians I know talk to each other regularly, sharing recommendations and keeping an eye on age appropriateness.

Unfortunately I am for real. When I first saw that crap on CSI I was laughing at how ridiculous it seemed. I mean I know people get off being spanked, restrained. Meh whatever. But it was just sooo bizarre. On the show they were at a conference? I don’t know it was portrayed like a gathering of dentists or stamp collectors. Completely bizarre.

Danaquestionseverything · 09/11/2018 11:44

I should add. Quite frankly it’s made me a bit edgy around costumed people in theme parks and the charity collectors dressed as koalas we get here.

Although maybe explain why Wil E Coyote groped my boobs at Dreamworld when I was in my 20s. Shock

Needmoresleep · 09/11/2018 11:47

It's in the same bracket as unicorns, rainbows, llamas and reversible sequins on clothes.

suprised you left out mermaids.

I agree. I have nothing against anime or Kpop, though did not understand when one of my DC suddenly bought into the cutseyness and went rushing off to comicon with a bunch of mates. Not for me!

But there is a darkness out there that parents need to watch out for. In the same way as you might keep an eye on a kid who becomes passionate about rap. Much is fine - but not all. The new challenge is that it is all accessible so easily. Playboy used to be on the top shelf, so you needed a tall friend!

sackrifice · 09/11/2018 11:48

You mean, like dressing up as a bear, being a scout master, and 'volunteering' to be a photographer at festivals?

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 09/11/2018 11:53

Or wearing adult nappies while dressed as a six year-old girl? Not that David Challenor would know anything about that. Nope.

Ahh Comicon DS2 was obsessed with going. The Oz one is supposed to be pretty lame, he had his sights set on San Fransisco.

Hope your kids enjoyed it. DS2 seems to have lost interest, a shame really, I was all set to go as Alison from Orphan Black.

whinny · 09/11/2018 11:58

I don't want to click on links that are offensive - what is a furrie? Can someone explain? I think I may vomit afterwards but I would appreciate it.

I have a young relative that I don't know well who is into Japanese animation and her father is really really rubbish - her father has a rubbish attitude to women is highly sexist and very overbearing. It just really fits reading this that he allows his daughter to get into this kind of stuff and is very sad.

PineappleSunrise · 09/11/2018 12:01

But there is a darkness out there that parents need to watch out for. In the same way as you might keep an eye on a kid who becomes passionate about rap. Much is fine - but not all.

Sure. But as the National Crime Agency site I posted to before points out, it's the behaviour of the people you're meeting out there and what they're asking for that's key, not the pop culture on its own.

If it's not anime, it will be something else that kids like and use. Keeping on top of law enforcement assessment of apps kids are using is a useful thing to do:

*Or wearing adult nappies while dressed as a six year-old girl?8

In Canada, these 50 yr old men dressed as 6 year old girls are brought in to the government as advisers.

Datun · 09/11/2018 12:04

The whole transgender juggernaut is a perverts dream. (Not transsexuals, HQ).

The Canadian guy who is suing beauty salons for the women not touching his genitalia, turns out to be a disgusting paedophile.

He can sue these beauty salons, because the absolute fools (or creeps) who have made the laws think enabling men to do they want is more important than safeguarding women and children.

Any woman would know that this guy was a pervert. We don't need the proof. Nonetheless, we have it.

whinny · 09/11/2018 12:05

what is a furrie though?

PineappleSunrise · 09/11/2018 12:09

...I should add that there definitely seem to be a few communities that I'd think should be of interest to the Internet Watch Foundation. Most of the horrible stuff in anime is illegal in the UK, cartoon or not. People involved in sharing it around the internet would be of interest to the law enforcement here.

Needmoresleep · 09/11/2018 12:10

Pineapple, you can control your kids apps all you want, but how do you control what they watch on friends phones.

My kids came through their teenage year fine, indeed are surprisingly conservative. (There are some interesting statistics about the increasing numbers of young adults, who like one of mine, do not drink at all.) But they were, despite us being reasonably cautious, exposed to quite complex stuff quite early, and were obviously upset enough about some of it to confide in me. And I doubt they were in any way unusual. My gut feel is that some of the weirdness stems from this very easy exposure to anything and everything.

Danaquestionseverything · 09/11/2018 12:11

Whiny

Anime is a Japanese style of cartoons. Sailor Moon was a popular example of an animation. It’s a particular style of drawing, but there are subsets of it - Hentai for example. There are articles out there on the internet that discuss how some anime promotes paedophilia.

As for furries - keep innocence. What is seen cannot be unseen.

Danaquestionseverything · 09/11/2018 12:18

NeedmoreSleep

You make an excellent point about your young adults. Mine seem to be headed down the same path.

Who knew that teens rebel against status quo?

deepwatersolo · 09/11/2018 12:23

So "furry" doesn't actually mean "I like to pretend to be a cat or bear and do hugs and stroking" like you'd think at all. It's actually code for I get off on child sex abuse.

Not summarily, I gather from the linked youtube vid. SOme are into paedophilia, no doubt, and some use it to get in contact with underage people. But there seems to be a subsection of furries who don't see/live it as a sexual thing. And then there are still others, who are sexually interested in animals and a subsection of those lives that out, be it with their pets or... roadkill. Yep, you didn't misread. Roadkill.

PineappleSunrise · 09/11/2018 12:25

You can't control what they watch on their friend's phones, Needmoresleep. (Well, you can when they're little because you can choose friends carefully and arrange playdates with parents whose attitudes to screens adheres to your own.) When you're dealing with teens, it's a whole different ball game.

Have you read the National Crime Agency link I posted? There are a LOT of videos on there aimed at parents and various ages of children. I do recommend that parents who are worried listen to the officers who are working in online child protection first and foremost.

Danaquestionseverything · 09/11/2018 12:29

Holy Crappin Shit. I just looked at those links. I need a jaw drop emoji.

NO I repeat NO young girl is going to experiment to insert a tampon in a public toilet.

I’m raging. Angry

Datun · 09/11/2018 12:48

Danaquestionseverything

I know, I'm so angry I'm all over the place.

It's the fucking faux innocent as well. It's just foul.

Datun · 09/11/2018 12:48

*innocence

Danaquestionseverything · 09/11/2018 12:58

Ahh your phone might be doing the same tricks as mine. An effort type a sentence.

Yes the faux innocence, even worse was one of the “helpful “ replies.

Freaking Pedo Den.
