To me this is another example of the harm being done by porn being freely available on the internet.
There are lots of "teen" videos of graphic stuff available on youporn. Although the distributors would say the girls are over 18, they are encouraged to dress and act much younger.
I think the old style obscenity laws protected society from a lot of this (but were too stringent,). We need to go back to something like that and stop pretending that because it's all consenting adults who choose to perform/watch that it's harmless. It isn't.

FishCanFly · 09/11/2018 08:18

its scary how thing which used to be cool and fun became associations with all sorts of unsavoury shit.

LangCleg · 09/11/2018 08:20

Is this another example of infiltration?

Yes.

LangCleg · 09/11/2018 08:23

the public will not see nuance there. They will just think the ultra conservatives were right all along, the left is eating itself, no decent person supports paedophilia, etc. and lesbians and gays will be back to bloody square one

I've been saying this for ages now. The backlash is inevitable because of this (not because of transsexuals) and it will do a lot of damage to the LGB as well as the T. Also, it won't distinguish between third wave feminists who've cheered on all this and GC feminists, who haven't.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 09/11/2018 08:25

Absolutely lang

WarmWishes · 09/11/2018 08:28

So anyone with a Japanese style cartoon avatar on twitter is potentially suspect? There are loads and loads of tra's with them. I have read something like this before & generally been suspicious but wasn't sure if I was being bad minded.

LangCleg · 09/11/2018 08:39

I'll leave this study Multiple Paraphilic Diagnoses Among Sex Offenders here without comment.

Quote from it:

Only 10.4 percent of these "average paraphiliacs" had one diagnosis, 19.9 percent had two diagnoses, 20.6 percent had three diagnoses, and 11.5 percent had four diagnoses. The remaining 37.6 percent were concomitantly or nonconcomitantly involved in five to ten different paraphilic behaviors.

So anyone with a Japanese style cartoon avatar on twitter is potentially suspect?
Depends on context. if they're anime artists themselves, or fans of Studio Ghibli, that's one thing. But If they're into "adult anime" - massive red flag.
Also gaming communities are massively infiltrated by creeps. I've banned games where you are requested to add strangers as friends.

I have posted on here a few times about Furries.

BBC radio 1 had a feature about young Furries a few months back which pretty much described a young girl who found her true self in the fandom. She had a Furry 'Mom' from America who helped her to connect with the community online. She was describing how she was excited to go to her first convention soon.

I can't post links, but search for 'Furries' on MN and the thread should come up with the link to the feature (it might still be available to listen to). The thread was quite insightful. A few Furry Twitter users picked up on that thread, so I expect they will read this one too.

There are groups for young Furries to attend (under the age of 18). But they then graduate once they meet to age criteria.

The are several Twitter accounts with obvious Furry links (the usual Furry memes / profile pics) that are quite strict about not interacting with under 18s. But for these users to post about this, that should mean that there are others who are not so bothered about protecting minors too.

A while back, there was a thread about the abuse a Twitter user received from TRAs when she discussed her daughter who was transitioning. A lot of those TRAs had a lot of links to Furry profiles. Many seemed to have links to IT too.

My point is that mainstream (our favourite BBC) media is discussing the fandom without understanding of the wider context. It is stupid easy for a young person to listen to a teen feature on the radio, Google and then be exposed to porn in a matter of minutes.

PineappleSunrise · 09/11/2018 10:02

Any environment (online gaming, apps, chat channels) designed for children and teens is a magnet for paedophiles and hebephiles, just as organisations like the Guides and Scouts are. They go where the children go, and they pick up the interests that children have. That's how predators operate - they go where the prey is.

CEOP (UK National Crime Agency child protection dept) has a lot of information on keeping children safe online:

Y'all need to google 'secret gamer girl'.

This is potentially the sweet girls your kids are playing with online. Beard and all.

Ereshkigal · 09/11/2018 10:16

Google the Kiwi Farms thread.

To think that people in the BBC pushing this do not know the wider context is naive, at best.

They know.

JoggerBottom · 09/11/2018 10:25

Sackrifice I didn't think of it that way. It makes it even more chilling to think of the agenda at play.

sackrifice · 09/11/2018 10:28

How long did they know about Saville?

Racecardriver · 09/11/2018 10:41

I don’t think the public will turn on homosexuals. The generation who grew up when homosexuality was finally accepted are starting families now. Lots of lesbian couples on my face book feed are having babies and forming really wholesome family units. Loads of pictures of white middles class coupled with their Breton top wearing Eiffel class offspring reading books/participating in some other suitably wholesome activity. I think that for a lot of people the way we view homsexuality has really changed and I think that the way that gay people view themselves has really changed. Being attracted to the same sex is no longer sexually deviant. I don’t think that ordinary people will be able to look at same sex parent families and connect that with furries. At least I hope so. I certainly don’t.

Danaquestionseverything · 09/11/2018 10:42

I’m personally glad to see a man calling this filth (really can’t think of another word for it) out.

As someone rather new to feminism, I know it’s probably not a popular opinion. But ultimately when it comes to kids men are entitled to a say too.

Anime has always had an appeal to kids-hello it’s cartoons right? Right? Both my DS have had an i interest in cartoons (not just watching but making their own) as well as gaming. DS2 still is quite into it although, thankfully, I can see changes such as competition against known friends rather than internet randoms. He’s also shown a recent interest to mix it up more with physical activity. He’s the one I’ve worried about most as I’ve suspected but (one assessment assured me) he was not ASD.

My DS1 now 18 was really into tech/gaming as young man. Around 14 he discovered girls (which brings a new set of complications). At his final school year he’s made comments concerning some of his peers. Year 12 students playing “cheese touch” (Diary of a Wimpy Kid). St interviews teachers commented on his maturity in comparison to peers (must not of fucked him up too badly). These were the anime obsessed kids. DS2 was laughing about this. A 14 year old finding 17/18 immature.

When you look at this in the context of what anime truly is. It’s quite frightening to see how some young people are almost infantilised by it. Grooming 101.

Let’s get real. Unfortunately tech/IT is an industry where as women we really don’t have the numbers. Well except a few women and a lot more that identity as. Men do have the power here and we need them to call it out. It’s gone on for too long, the grooming, why else do we see so many supposedly intelligent uni students buying into these beliefs.

deepwatersolo · 09/11/2018 10:46

I believe so, too. Heck, regarding furries, I am at a point where I think this was already a thing when Stanley Kubrick shot 'the Shining', which clearly is a movie about paedophilia and has allusions of sexual acts in bear costumes and stuff.....

Kubrik tries to tell his audience, to warn us, imo. But as for this anime propagating BBC crowd: Just like with Savile, all those type of allusions... it must be quite gratifying for those in on the joke.

DogMamma · 09/11/2018 10:49

what the hell are furries?

Danaquestionseverything · 09/11/2018 10:50

Just to add. The majority of people (I hope) will not turn on LGB. But unfortunately some will. I personally will scream from the rooftops how the lesbians have been calling this out for decades.

Pedophiles are insidious. They will infiltrate anything to try for acceptance/legalisation. That includes positions of power and influence.

Watch closely who really steps up to defend this ideology.

Needmoresleep · 09/11/2018 10:54

Is there a big picture "what on earth is going on"

The first real internet generation are now young adults. The first generation who had access to the world wide web from within their homes.

We have seen:

  • a huge rise in late onset gender dysphoria
  • young Muslim girls with bright futures ahead of them travel to war zones to marry people they have never met
  • a whole strange cute anime/furry/Hello Kitty/Kpop on one side and something very dark behind.
  • a massive rise in adolescent mental health problems
  • kids getting murdered on London streets
  • (a personal observation) lots of of older teenagers who are "failing to launch"

etc, etc.

Our children can access the whole world from their bedrooms or phones. It is so difficult for us parents from a different generation. Compaints used to be about racking up a phone bill or playing music too loud. Instead I am irritated that DD always seems to have her headphones on. I have no idea what she listens to. DC are 20 and 22 now, but DS was 11 when older boys on a holiday scheme showed him porn videos on their phones. Nice parents we knew apologising to another boy's parents because their eight year old son, showing off on a play date, accessed porn his dad's computer, whilst some daft parents showed a completely age-inappropriate movie at a nine year old's birthday party. Plus a spate of very nasty on-line bullying at the start of secondary. And that before I get started on the violent video games that teens spent hours playing. Or the whole Kadashian/influencer peddling of "perfection" and conformity to blue/pink gender roles.

So what to do.

There is a need to restate basics. Freedom of speech. The importance of protection for the vulnerable including children. Adults, especially our MPs and our National Broadcaster, need to rise to the challenge, stop trying to be woke and down with the kids, but instead provide structure, priorities and protections.

Sorry these are hastely formed thoughts, but it does feel as if there is attack from every front. First and foremost most of us want to be good parents and to provide our kids with happy and safe childhoods. It seems to be getting more and more difficult.

deepwatersolo · 09/11/2018 10:58

Furries are people who dress as furry animals, adopt their characters...

Interesting video:

Danaquestionseverything · 09/11/2018 11:00

dogmamma
FGS don’t google it. Supposed to be adults that get their sexual thrills dressed as furry animals. Cute huh? Not really. I first encountered the concept on a CSI episode of all places.

The internet reveals a much darker side.

WarmWishes · 09/11/2018 11:00

Outside of twitter and seeing it mentioned on here, I have seen no evidence of Interest/knowledge of furries or even anime from my teenage children. I don't know whether to ask them, as don't want them looking it up!!

Is it relatively niche?

Danaquestionseverything · 09/11/2018 11:17

NeedmoreSleep

My boys had a similar situation with older kids showing them porn (this case a 14 yr old girl).

Fortunately (well it wasn’t a good situation) was my eldest (11 at the time). This wasn’t your old school “Porky’s” type sex romp (what we classified as porn as teenagers in my day). She was showing videos from a website called Omeagle (I’ll never forget the name). One video showed CSA.

My son and another neighbourhood boy came and spoke to me about it. They realised that I finally saw through the girl. Someone I had welcomed into my home and tried to offer support for her school and home life problems. She was the first person I had ever seen the “mask” drop. Very chilling. I knew about it intellectually, but to see it, especially from essentially a child. Chilling. I did make a report to both the police and social services as someone that age with such a fascination with porn raised so many red flauss a possible victim of CSA.
