The Guardian's US Staff are Revolting

FreshlyBakedRolls · 02/11/2018 22:34

Seems like the Guardian staff over-the-pond are leading a revolt against the Guardian UK's editorial stance, as it is "Transphobic".

They state "our journalism should be grounded in the principle that trans women are women"

OP posts:

Yep Floral, it is the obvious next step in an ideology that prohibits any distinctions being made between those who are women and those who aren’t but wish to be.

If it weren’t for the leverage (and funding) the word ‘trans’ would be gone already.

LangCleg · 03/11/2018 11:12

it also doesn't help that we're not allowed use the word on MN when describing a male-bodied person

No, it doesn't. It's insidious and it affects the way you speak outside the forum. Another reason I heartily disapprove of terms being verboten (including the terms used by the "other side").

LangCleg · 03/11/2018 11:13

If it weren’t for the leverage (and funding) the word ‘trans’ would be gone already.

Very, very, very important point.

R0wantrees · 03/11/2018 11:17

This article has really pissed me off!
There's so much there that is wrong, I can't begin to articulate it.

Popchyk · 03/11/2018 11:19

But Katharine Viner has already published it in The Guardian, Flo.

Throw a hissy fit about something that doesn't concern you and The Guardian will reward you by publishing your article. That capitulation just incentivises people to push their agenda even more.

Viner has shown real weakness here.

Feed the monster and the monster will come after you.

Yes ^^

Yes but they'll still need to retain some kind of different language to distinguish between the class of women who must obey and the class of "women" who must be obeyed.

terryleather · 03/11/2018 11:31

Yes but they'll still need to retain some kind of different language to distinguish between the class of women who must obey and the class of "women" who must be obeyed.

This nails it for me.

What else is the purpose of TERF?

FloralBunting · 03/11/2018 11:40

Cis also serves that purpose. I'm going to guess that trans will eventually be dropped because of its 'othering' nature, but cis will be retained with a vice like grip.

Hereitisnow · 03/11/2018 11:52

In chemistry, the terms cis- and trans- are used to describe the positions of a group with respect to a double bond. The meanings are 'same side' and 'opposite side', or 'same' and 'opposite'.

Therefore ‘ cis-woman' = 'same-woman' = 'woman' and

'Trans-woman' = ‘opposite-woman’ = ...

It’s all right there.

ProfessoressWoland · 03/11/2018 12:00

"our journalism should be grounded in the principle that trans women are women"

What happened to truth and freedom of speech? I'm glad I'm no longer funding this nonsense, but after 20 years as a subscriber I'm still interested to know why the Guardian is so blind on this issue. Is it just identity politics, or is the G's funding model more complex than it lets on?

LassWiADelicateAir · 03/11/2018 12:37

Appropos of just how bonkers The Guardian is today's Feast section has quite a nice recipe for leek, potato and stilton cakes.

What is bonkers about the recipe is the suggestion that instead of say 15 minutes boiling the potatoes before mashing them (the normal way for making fish cakes) it says to bake them at 220C for an hour and then mash them. What a waste of energy and time, especially for a recipe which otherwise would be very cheap to make.

The ingredients include "1/2 tsp of ground dried Iranian lime". Helpfully "If you can't get hold of dried Iranian lime, use a teasponful of lime zest, or just leave it out altogether"

The recipe is an Ottolenghi one - and perhaps unsurprisingly one can order dried lime from Ottolenghi online.

Good to see Hadley on twitter standing up for British feminists and criticising the patronising and ignorant (not all American feminists believe TWAW) tone.

He does like his niche ingredients!

This. EXACTLY.

2rebecca · 03/11/2018 14:35

Agree

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 03/11/2018 15:45

We're already seeing 'women and cis women'

2rebecca · 03/11/2018 15:48

If they keep pushing then public peak trans will just arrive earlier. Ordinary people don't recognise or use Cis and know what a woman is.
They seem to live in a woke bubble divorced from reality

BlatheringWuther · 03/11/2018 16:17

How can they not see that they are saying biology itself is offensive and outdated?

Now there are many things about the human body that I think evolution has let us down on - the matter of teeth jumps to mind. I also find it hard to come to terms with it dating sometimes, when I can't do things I used to.

But actually claiming that the concept of a body itself and all of its functions no longer matter because we're all so modern now? I wish.

happydappy2 · 03/11/2018 16:47

This is why it is imperative that we retain the word woman to mean adult human female. Cis is insulting & irrelevant. One of the linked articles from US guardian did make me chuckle, a woman who aged 19 transitioned to become a man, yet had no surgery, had a Drs appt for a health check up, the Dr asked to check the persons testicles-they explained they didn't have any....Dr was slightly bemused then asked, so you're a woman with short hair? trans person was offended, but I think the Dr was spot on! That person was still a woman, even if T had made them look more masculine.

pachyderm · 03/11/2018 17:27

I worry about a kind of generational brain death caused by twenty or so years of the internet. Those young journos seem so stupid and ignorant, and incapable of rational argument. They bloody terrify me to be honest.

Ereshkigal · 03/11/2018 17:57

I know what you mean pachyderm. It is quite terrifying how devoid of critical thinking ability many people are.

Electron1 · 03/11/2018 18:04

Holy shit, Woman, you're so right. We've been so brainwashed that I no longer even notice how careful I am to avoid the word 'man'.

I spent 15/20 minutes explaining my views to my Labour MP and his older male assistant today at his surgery and I always said male or man, or cross dresser, transvestite, fetishist or transsexual. And they never batted and eyelid. Not a flicker.

The only word I hesitated on was when I was saying they don't mostly have surgery, and only use hormones to grow....and the elderly man said breasts!

Why are we censoring ourselves. It's ridiculous.

The only word I heisted over was when I was discussing
