Medical doctors who believe trans women are women.

I have two medical doctors in my acquaintances who openly and on social media state that TWAW, and share pro-trans anti-women type petitions and articles. One is female. One is "non binary" female

I just don't get it. How can you square that with medical training? Surely they are aware of at least some biological differences between trans, and let us say, natal women?

Let me state thoughthat I fully support all trans "folk" rights to live without harrasment, discrimination, and with all the human rights everyone else has in this country. But trans women are not women. They are trans. And should be excluded from women's refuges, prisons, wards etc. In my opinion. And in my opinion I don't care about toilets or properly cubicled changing rooms either, although I know some do.

One wonders if they paid any attention at all during anatomy, genetics, or physiology lectures in first year at medical school!
Perhaps they are trying to be kind and inclusive by accepting a legal fiction. Without realising that militant TRAs will trample all over women’s rights if they’re indulged in this nonsense.

There are plenty of scientists who believe in God. Why do you care, are they not entitled to their views?

BreakWindandFire · 27/10/2018 20:13

Because it's a metaphysical stance, not about physical reality?

Coyoacan · 27/10/2018 20:15

My cousin, who is a GP, says that critical thinking is definitely not encouraged in medical school.

IKeepFlouncing · 27/10/2018 20:16

Are they using there profession to spout off this view as am sure it’s in the small print about wording whilst representing NHS don’t know about if they private.

Haddock has obviously had hands slapped hence the change in profile and temporary personality transplant which we knew wouldn’t last and see through

titchy · 27/10/2018 20:24

Ask them if they'd carry out a smear test on a TW then. And if not, ask why not, if TWAW.

ThePrincipal · 27/10/2018 20:25

I must be tired and seeing double.

I read medical as medieval Confused

Femaledisrespectful · 27/10/2018 20:25

I work with medics day to day and I'm permanently astonished by their lack of critical thinking. I was trying to explain to one the other day that just because a patient chose not to speak to him, it did not mean he could assume she didn't have capacity to make a particular (life or death in this case) decision. It took a very long time to get him understand.

ABitCrapper · 27/10/2018 20:27

It's not done in a professional role, just private, but I just don't understand it. I don't understand why trans people can't be proud to be trans. I have gay and bi friends who are proud to be gay and bi, they don't want to claim to be heterosexual by altering the definition of heterosexual.
And as medical doctors I'd bloody hope they would treat trans people as trans according to their sex and hormone treatment status!

They can believe what they want but if their proposed treatment for cancer involved a visit to Lourdes they can shove it.

I don’t care if a taxi driver believes in evolution. I do care if my doctor does because strains of viruses evolve at a visible rate.

PearsOfWisdom · 27/10/2018 20:31

Because they are using their own definition of the word “ woman “.

Like the US president who didn’t count a BJ as sexual relations.

War is peace
Freedom is slavery
Ignorance is strength

Justhadathought · 27/10/2018 20:36

Being educated to a high level does not necessarily correlate with an aptitude for critical thinking. most people are pack creatures, and what is most important to them is going long with the crowd with which they identify.

BlardyBlar · 27/10/2018 20:36

They understand biology and know there’s a medical difference. They’re just following the new religion like sheep. They may also be arrogant enough to believe that doctors really are God-like beings who can transform people so much that they almost become the opposite sex.

Not sure when I became so cynical. Only they MUST know. Deep down, somewhere.

raisinsraisins · 27/10/2018 20:37

Ikeepflouncing- Adrian Harrop tweeted Oxford University yesterday regarding the professor, outing his identity and asking if they should be employing him. So still up to same campaign.

raisinsraisins · 27/10/2018 20:41

Femaledisrespectful - I made the mistake of going to a GP to talk about possible mental health issues, and she completely dismissed me - I went and sat in my car afterwards to have a cry. So yes, I think some Doctors have some learning to do about people.

Femaledisrespectful · 27/10/2018 20:48

@raisinsraisins I'm sorry you experienced that I have a very tough role as a secondary profession within a medical environment, but I am humbled to do what I do, despite how difficult it is. I am also fortunate that the lead consultant respects me. Unfortunately that is only borne from the fact that he is aware of my qualifications and he places importance on being 'educated'.

Yes @ABitCrapper - it was an AND no less...

EverardDigby · 27/10/2018 20:48

I have been investigated for various symptoms over the past two years, and I think I've managed to get to the bottom of it myself, but I've been horrified by the lack of curiosity and questioning by medical professionals, such as them dismissing anything that doesn't fit with the (wrong) diagnosis they already gave me, or having any interest in the chronology of symptoms. Is it something in the nature of people who go into medicine or does the system discourage analytical thought or have I just been unlucky?

Back to the topic, I would not have any confidence in a doctor that thought TWAW. They can't actually think this biologically, do they mean they believe TW genuinely believe they AW?

dontalltalkatonce · 27/10/2018 20:48

That makes them, well, stupid. But doctors are people, you're going to get a few numpties in the bunch.

ConorMcGregorsChin · 27/10/2018 20:55

Great thread. And agree with lots of previous posters.
I went to my (female) GP this week with perimenopause symptoms. Largely physical. She offered me anti depressants. I don't need or want anti depressants. The NHS is getting rather confused, I think. An old, retired GP friend of mine has much clearer views.

MrGHardy · 27/10/2018 20:59

"I just don't get it. How can you square that with medical training?"

How can scientists be religious?

It's an ideology. If you believe a woman is nothing more than a feeling, then it makes perfect sense to believe TWAW.

IKeepFlouncing · 27/10/2018 21:06

raisins Every time I see mention of Haddock I think of Julie tweet to reference of dickhead 😂

I only see mention of dickhead if it comes up on my twitter timeline.

Is this same uni as the self indulgent selfie two that got someone dismissed? Or prof one.

I’d be pissed as a parent if I was funding my little darlings at Uni! Also if was my DD I’d be asking for refund to pay loans back, fuck paying for education, who going to replace them now

merrymouse · 27/10/2018 21:06

I would be worried about how they are defining 'women'.

Even if they don't think 'woman' is a medical term, what are the qualities that they think men have that women don't? Why do they think there are still so many more male than female MPs.

'TWAW' isn't just problematic medically, it also implies complete ignorance of the reasons that women have been denied an education and the right to vote. Who do they think is affected when women can't access birth control?
