Really passed off with Pointless - England goal scorers

MoggyP · 27/10/2018 18:47

Because they did not specify which sort - any who have scored 10 or more goals, a goal, or a hat-trick.

And the only answers are for football! Where are the scorers in netball, hockey, handball, polo, rugby union, rugby league.

If they meant it was a football question, they should have bloody said so"

Wha'?

hollyhzd · 27/10/2018 19:19

Mate I dont get it

Taylor22 · 27/10/2018 19:27

Did someone crack open the Saturday night Vino early?

EggysMom · 27/10/2018 19:30

Normally Richard explains what they are looking for. e.g. those who have scored more than 10 goals in any England international football match or World Cup match or somesuch. Not sure I've ever heard him specify 'men's' or 'women's'

Why don't you tweet him and ask? He's pretty responsive.

TwistedStitch · 27/10/2018 19:32

He did specify- he said the men's professional football team since 1900.

camelstraw · 27/10/2018 19:33

I get it.

And yes, if it was a football question, they should have said it was a football question (I'm guessing all the answers were male football players)

Issue is that (male) football was seen as default - the other sports stead in the opening post could all have provided correct answers for the topic as given.

Agree - shit underlying assumptions

ShackUp · 27/10/2018 19:34

The full explanation might have been edited out for timing reasons.

Early?!

MoggyP · 27/10/2018 19:36

I missed him saying it was men's professional football since 1900

Still think it's a pity they didn't put the word 'football' (and ideally 'men's football') into the actual topic. Because he sure as hell hadn't said that when the contestants were choosing their final topic from the short-list.

@RandomlyChosenName my children are still conscious. I can not consider the fact that there are others on this planet enjoying wine while I suffer!
If I'm unhappy so is everyone else!

FermatsTheorem · 27/10/2018 19:57

So, everyone, without resort to google, who is the most capped England player of all time? Wink

(Oh, and most of the points in rugby don't come from goals, as in drop goals, they come from tries, conversions and penalties).

MoggyP · 27/10/2018 21:33

I'm not sure, but my guess wouid be Rachel Heyhoe-Smith.

But that's not a goal-scoring sport.

OP posts:
MoggyP · 27/10/2018 21:38

Sorry Heyhoe Flint

Who was capped for two sports, and who created the women's World Cup in 1973 (two years before the men's started)

FermatsTheorem · 27/10/2018 21:44

Apologies - was indeed thinking of football (though I just checked Rachel Heyhoe Flint - 22 test appearance in cricket, 2 caps in hockey).

But it's another Rachel - Rachel Yankee, with 129 caps (4 more than the highest capped England man, Peter Shilton).

Incidentally I found myself thinking "I know it's not that long since Heyhoe Flint died..." and googled and found her obituary - lovely photo of her in action, absolutely classic roll of the wrists to keep the ball down!

Fara Williams

Good point about how the stereotypes are reinforced. I didn't mind the default to men's football during the World Cup, as the context then was so obvious. But this was free-standing

FermatsTheorem · 28/10/2018 09:24

Ooh I stand corrected Viking - I hadn't noticed Williams amassing that many caps (I have watched her play - fabulous player).

qumquat · 28/10/2018 09:28

Was this for the final? The topic headings are always deliberately vague, then explained fully after the contestants make a choice. I've always assumed it's to make it more difficult for the contestants as they're not 100% sure what the question
will be. Iagree it would have been much better if the category included women's football.

iVampire · 28/10/2018 18:05

Watching tonight’s, and they managed to specify on the ‘make your choice for the final’ board that the sport was European men’s football.

So they can avoid stereotypes whilst maintaining the level of deliberate vagueness they want. But they chose not to on the show broadcast yesterday, and that’s s pity
