A question from David TC Davis on the silencing of women on GRA consultation and a question on NDAs about being used by the rich and powerful to protect them from accusations of sexual harassment.

Will try and post Hansard up, when it pops up.

Sorry, Red - we cross posted.

Shall I get mine removed so we can keep it to one thread? Getting a bit fed up with mulitples on the same topic.

LangCleg · 24/10/2018 12:36

I missed the full question - just caught the end.

May faffed a bit with "everyone must be heard" but committed the Equalities minister to a meeting with him. Unsure if May meant Mordaunt or a junior in the department.

HilltopTractor · 24/10/2018 12:38

Looking forward to watching this when a clip is available.

Question was about the need to take account of the concerns of women in any GRA amendment; and would the PM meet him and a victim of sexual violence to talk about those concerns? Mr Davies referred to women's groups having had meetings cancelled and other difficulties during the consultation.

The PM emphasised the importance of ensuring that any changes didn't impact adversely on women; said that many groups had been seen before and during the consultation, including women's groups; and she'd arrange for relevant minister to meet him and the sexual violence victim.

Good that this question was raised and the answer was reasonably encouraging, I thought

LangCleg · 24/10/2018 12:52

Here's my big problem when they say that they've spoken to women's groups - yes, they've spoken to the leadership but have they spoken to the service users? Look at the difference between the Stonewall (spoke to leaders) and FPFW (spoke to volunteers and service users) reports on the domestic violence sector.

HilltopTractor · 24/10/2018 13:06

Third sector? Charity corruption.

I noted this when the Ice bucket money and awareness was stolen and the horrors of McMillan NHS Nurse branding was revealed.

Middle-class people collecting virtue cookies, a career and salary from funding stolen from vulnerable people. Money goes to privileged who lose their voice and actual help.

Exactly, it's not 'women's groups' they need to talk to, it's groups of women, or individual women. It seems that many women's groups have to be trans-inclusive in order to keep their funding, or have been lobbied into submission by Stonewall et al.

If anyone is interested in the NDA story in relation to the question Jess Phillips asked, this is an interesting explainer thread.

I find it fascinating how both questions relate to shutting women up in some way and undermine the rule of law.

Not used to the format of PMq's.

After Davies asked the question and before May answered a number of MPs stood up. Does that mean anything?

LangCleg · 24/10/2018 13:44

Middle-class people collecting virtue cookies, a career and salary from funding stolen from vulnerable people.

Exactly. The Charitable Industrial Complex. Not much charitable about it.

FermatsTheorem · 24/10/2018 13:50

NDAs and their ramifications for freedom of the press and reporting serious (and illegal) conduct are the front page of today's Telegraph:

www.telegraph.co.uk/

Basically, they are being prevented by the use of NDAs from breaking the story of a major British business man's serial sexual harassment and racial abuse of his staff.

Summary on the BBC:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-45964165

We've been saying on here that the "right to be forgotten" plus legal namechanges plus any possible future legal restrictions on "deadnaming" would be a disaster from the point of view of safeguarding and for a free and open society.

FermatsTheorem · 24/10/2018 13:51

Just read that Jess Phillips has announced she's prepared to name the businessman in parliament! Good work, Jess.

ScarletBegonias · 24/10/2018 14:15

David Davies is (unsurprisingly) getting a bit of flack on his Twitter thread about his question but so far the replies are mainly positive. I've thanked him for asking the question, as have several people.

OlennasWimple · 24/10/2018 14:19

WarmWishes MPs stand up to signal to the Speaker that they want to say something (they rarely get the chance during PMQs, so it's sort of for show)

lucydogz · 24/10/2018 14:21

Why isn't Jess Phillips asking this? She seems to have a high opinion of her own ballsiness. Oh hang on, she doesn't support women.
Seriously, what has the world come to when it's a male tory who asks these questions?

ShotsFired · 24/10/2018 14:22

Did anyone else clock what TM said?

She called us "women" in the context of dealing with risks of the GRA.

It's almost like she recognises that the word means "adult human females" only, not "AHF + anyone who fancies it". Fancy that....

LizzieSiddal · 24/10/2018 14:37

Good on David Davis and Jess Phillips!

Mind you, if these women are to meet with Maria Miller or Penny Mordant, they've already decided 'TWAW', so what is the point?

Knicknackpaddyflak · 24/10/2018 14:42

Boris's expression behind DD is interesting. Initially before the question is asked he's smirking about something. By the time DD has reached the end of the question, he's got his head down and he's looking pretty grim. Looking around the room, no eye rolling or dismissal there either.

2BorNot2Bvocal · 24/10/2018 14:46

^^ I thought Jess Phillips supports TWAW?

HilltopTractor · 24/10/2018 14:47

I wonder if the Top business man has a shop?

lucydogz · 24/10/2018 14:47

She does.

lucydogz · 24/10/2018 14:50

..so she ain't no champion for me. Attention seeking stunts like illegally giving the business man's name is more her style. Maximum publicity and no responsibility.

2BorNot2Bvocal · 24/10/2018 14:57

Here's my big problem when they say that they've spoken to women's groups - yes, they've spoken to the leadership but have they spoken to the service users?

I think the unions were the worst offenders for not seeking views.
