The problems with Amnesty.

I was chatting with a friend earlier and mentioned that I was no longer donating to AI because of their stance on prostitution etc. She has helped them for a long time, so asked if I could send her some more info, what should I send her ? I think there are other problems with them aren’t there ?

Also their shitty support of self ID where the appropriated the fact that 2 women a week get killed by their partners to talk about a largely non existent UK trans murder problem.

You might have heard discussions on the media and social media trying to tip trans rights against women’s rights. These discussions are informed by prejudice and misinformation. Trans women are women and trans men are men. Making the process to obtain legal gender recognition easier and respectful of human rights will only improve the lives of trans people, it will not affect anyone else.

Gender non-conforming people suffer under patriarchal social norms as much as cis women (cis = non trans). Trans women are suffering violence and abuse as women and because they are trans. Over a quarter of trans people experience domestic violence and two women a week are killed by a partner or ex-partner in England and Wales.

Great, thank you. I’ll send her the info. She has done fundraising for them for decades, and she is late 60s I think now, doesn’t use twitter etc, so hadn’t seen any criticism of Amnesty.

That statement from Amnesty was criticised for sleight of hand - the final sentence makes it sound as if the 2 women a week who are killed are trans whereas they are women. They have also been criticised for the hypocrisy of their self-ID stance since they are campaigning for single-sex spaces in other countries, arguing that this is essential for the safety, dignity & privacy of women & girls.
I recently left them for these reasons.
