I'm sat watching the scene where the boys are talking about the younger one taking her home - she's wasted, she won't know the difference. The photographs taken,..

I'm mortified!

Haven’t seen sixteen candles but recently watched ‘the breakfast club’ for the 1st time on Netflix and found a lot of the judd nelson/molly ringwald scenes very uncomfortable to watch in this day and age. I had to google it and found that Molly ringwald herself had actually written an article concerning some of the problematic aspects of these films, including 16 candles. Worth a read

I saw an article about 16 candles the other day describing the rape scene, sounds horrendous.

I agree re: breakfast club. Horrible film.

I didn't make it that far, I stopped watching when Sam is sitting in the car with Ted. He was so aggressive; most of the boys in the film seemed so disrespectful. Sounds like it gets worse as it goes on.

beefchowmein I watched it recently and I agree. Bender is so abusive and horrible to Claire. And why does Allison have to get rid of her fab goth look so that the boring jock will fall for her? We all wanted to be goth Allison in the 80s, it was such a betrayal!

It's a really good portrayal of teenagers. But the sexual politics are grim.

Meant to say I watched it as a teenager in the 80s and thought Bender was coolConfused
