Ahem!

Yes but the difference is that the data of male staff was also leaked in that case. It's only a crime if it happens to men.

RiddleyW · 23/10/2018 06:21

So you think that a leak of a handful of IP addresses (arguably not personal data at all) is the same as the leak of thousands of people’s names, addresses, bank details and salaries?

GC feminist here but some of you have really lost touch with reality.

ADastardlyThing · 23/10/2018 06:27

IP addresses absolutely are personal data.

RiddleyW · 23/10/2018 06:46

It depends whether they can be combined with other info held by mumsnet to identify a poster. In my case it couldn’t.

ADastardlyThing · 23/10/2018 07:10

Exactly, so ip addresses are classed as personal data.

RiddleyW · 23/10/2018 07:13

Again, it depends.

ADastardlyThing · 23/10/2018 07:31

The ico and gdpr regulations disagree.

🙄

ADastardlyThing · 23/10/2018 07:36

There is no 'depends'. Personal data is either personal data or it's not. IP addresses come under gdpr scope as being personal data, therefore, they are personal data.

RiddleyW · 23/10/2018 07:51

personal data is either personal data or it's not

This is not correct - you can have data which is personal data in some hands but not others. We’re getting a tad off topic though!

NopeNi · 23/10/2018 07:53

It actually depends on what Emma the intern had access to.

For all we know she saw IP addresses, names, email addresses, physical addresses (from competitions) for people, plus years of comments they'd made on boards. Users aren't quite so anonymous to Mumsnet if someone there grew particularly interested and had a vendetta against them.

I don't think we ever had confirmation if there's any date stamps/ways to check which person's checked out records. MNHQ had no idea what she'd taken and still don't, except what she's told them.

ADastardlyThing · 23/10/2018 07:56

Not wholly off topic if you're suggesting the IP breach wasn't a data breach. It was. Personal data is any data relating to an identifiable natural person. IP addresses fall under gdpr scope as personal data. So they are personal data.

StillAFeminist · 23/10/2018 09:05

If it would be Emma on trial I'd say go ahead but it wouldn't be. The Morrisons case was clear easy to understand.

HilltopTractor · 23/10/2018 09:10

What about Madigan and the Labour FB group? They all had access to data, being MPs and Cllrs.

FloralBunting · 23/10/2018 09:11

Well, a successful action like that against against Mumsnet would be the end of it, and considering it's the mainstream platform for GC voices, I think that would be a profoundly silly path to take.

lenaperkins · 23/10/2018 09:40

Lily Madigan’s comment about ‘pretty data’ turned my stomach.

BlackeyedGruesome · 23/10/2018 09:51

Perhaps it was written in wax crayon?

QuinionsRainbow · 23/10/2018 11:35

IP addresses absolutely are personal data.

Well, ours changes quite regularly, probably whenever BT re-configure their servers, and almosst always when we re-boot our hub. And Google's interpretation of their location is extremely wonky, to say the least.

ADastardlyThing · 23/10/2018 11:46

Agree quinion, but the fact remains that they are classed as personal data under the scope of gdpr

StillAFeminist · 23/10/2018 11:49

lenaperkins what did LM say about "pretty data" ?

More generally I've not heard the term "pretty data" before so I don't know what it means or where it's come from so if anyone could enlighten me that would be fabulous.

(I know normally Google is my friend but first page results gave me nothing useful but did list this thread Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 23/10/2018 14:51

I thought that Emma did have access to addresses, real names etc, wasn’t that confirmed at the time or am I mistaken ?
The “pretty data” was in a menacing tweet by LM when about to start the role of Women’s Officer. I don’t have. A screenshot but it was something like “ I’m looking forward to [the job etc] with all that pretty data “. Maybe someone will have the tweet.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 23/10/2018 16:08

‘Pretty data’ might just be LM being OMG I am so cute and totes adorbs so all my things are shiny and pretty

SirVixofVixHall · 23/10/2018 21:25

That wasn’t how it came across.

StillAFeminist · 24/10/2018 05:52

Thanks SirVix I'd interpret that the same way as you, if anyone has a screenshot could they post here please
Thanks
