So what does one identify oneself as today?

Whatever the answer. It is wrong, because it is a nonsensical question IMO, which implies one is an imposter and delusional.

You either ARE a woman or not, if you identify as one but is not BEING one....? Imposter and delusional. Sorry that’s the 💡 light bulb moment I had today and all these light bulbs moments are all logically pointing to the same conclusion.

‘I identify as’ is totally meaningless.

Either you are something or you aren’t something.

MadamBatty · 22/10/2018 12:44

I identify as a rhinoceros 🦏. That’s how I feelz.

Ginslinger · 22/10/2018 12:45

Excuse me! I'm a Jack Russell Terrier - woof

Spasm0dic · 22/10/2018 12:48

Im an owl and should be in bed, rather than at work

iklboogiemanunderthebed · 22/10/2018 12:49

I'm a rather foppish squirrel today.

LangCleg · 22/10/2018 12:50

I identify as being in a thoroughly bad mood about the cult of identification.

RueDeWakening · 22/10/2018 12:51

I identify as someone with no parenting responsibilities.

Sadly no-one has told my children.

HawkeyeInConfusion · 22/10/2018 12:51

Today I identify as an organised and efficient homemaker.

The dried spaghetti still on the dining room floor from last night whilst I procrastinate on MN suggests I am delusional.

Whompthatwillow · 22/10/2018 12:53

I identify as a gorgeous, young, Slim model. The mirror tells me that I'm deluded.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 22/10/2018 12:55

I identify as someone who enjoys my work and is very productive. Luckily, my boss is yet to realise and colludes in my delusion.

ADastardlyThing · 22/10/2018 12:57

Im a man today, so for today I can forget about my treatment for my gynae problems and not have to take my painkillers to help with my severe menstrual cramps.

Funnily enough though, the threat of cancer is still here and I'm still cramping like a bastard. Funny, that biology stuff.

Nuffaluff · 22/10/2018 12:58

‘I identify as’ is not meaningless in all contexts.
For example, someone might identify as gay. They might not have had a sexual relationship yet, or maybe not ever. That is still their identity.
I know a woman who looks white. She has a black dad. She identifies as being black. Someone else might look at her and say, ‘no, you’re white’ but her identity matters.
I’m not an expert on identity politics at all. Did it originally come about because marginalised people needed to assert their own identity to stop their oppressors defining them?
I agree though that identity politics has gone too far. Being a man or woman is an objective reality (barring cases of intersex people, of course).

Weezol · 22/10/2018 12:58

I identify as whatever DCat tells me I am. I know my place.

Apparently I am currently identifying as unreasonable for not thinking Dreamies should be her staple diet.

ChilliJamandAvocado · 22/10/2018 13:03

If you are what you eat, I identify as a large latte and a couple of squares of millionaire's shortbread Grin Brew

BettyDuMonde · 22/10/2018 13:05

Nope, identifying is always nonsensical.

Nuffaluff In both your examples the people are actually what they say they are, gay, and from a BAME background.

chocolatebox1 · 22/10/2018 13:19

You can identify as anything you want, but scientifically you're a human and either a male or a female one. Unless you're transitioning between the two, in which case you will then become one or the other. People can think whatever they like or be whatever they like, whether it's a pixie or a butterfly, but it's beyond me why they expect everyone else to pander to them

ThePrincipal · 22/10/2018 13:30

I disagree that you BECOME one or the other after transitioning.
E.g. you are still a man, albeit one who wears make up and a dress and had hormones etc etc.

First part correct. Second part - nope. You'd be a feminised male or a masculinised female but you would not have actually changed sex - it's simply not something mammals can do.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/10/2018 13:32

I'm identifying as a scientific pedant today, btw

BettyDuMonde · 22/10/2018 13:35

Agree. A man without a penis is still a man. The only transition is from man-with-a-penis to man-without-a-penis.

Women can choose to be compassionate to men-without-penises, but that doesn’t mean accepting that men-without-penises are indistinguishable from women.

Clearly, that would be a load of (dismembered) bollocks.

Sleeplikeasloth · 22/10/2018 13:52

I identify as a velociraptor today

bluetitsaretits · 22/10/2018 13:53

There's such a big difference between "I identify as....." and "I am. .." isn't there? !

The first one is all about validation from others. I think that's what psychologists call an 'external locus of identity' -not really healthy, and probably better addressed than indulged in the long run.

VickyEadie · 22/10/2018 13:58

I'm identifying as Germaine Bunbury today (to be fair, there are some marked, entirely coincidental similarities) and am taking no crap from anyone.

Same as it ever was...

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 22/10/2018 13:58

I identify as someone who does not want to work today.

bluetitsaretits · 22/10/2018 14:08

vicky there's some Bunbury related news;

I identify as a healthy and athletic millionaire today. Hopefully that means I don't have to go to work.
