Cafe in Deptford banning women who say things they don’t like.

The Greenhouse in Detford had this sticker sign up.
Given the tiny number of trans people who must come through their doors compared to the large number of women, and that the likelihood of any of those women “intimidating” transpeople is pretty much nil, then wtf is this about ? I’m finding this banning of women who hold different opinions deeply sinister.

As it’s impossible to tell who’s ‘trans exclusionary’ at a glance, and as only 18% (at most) favour self-ID, wouldn’t it be easiest all around to simply refuse to serve 4 out of every 5 customers?

ohello · 22/10/2018 03:27

If I was not already suspicious of transgenderism, I would be after this thread. Too many good points.

I do understand the desire "to be nice" but nice to whom and at what cost to women and girls? Why on earth would someone tell a little girl that she is not allowed to say no to penis?

You do realize that's child abuse, right? It's the kind of grooming which pedophiles do.

thewitchofwentworth · 22/10/2018 05:03

Obviously they will need a purity test to ensure all customers are engaging in goodthink. Maybe chanting "trans women are women" at all potential customers and anyone who doesn't immediately respond in the affirmative can be safely refused service.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/10/2018 06:49

If they're so into purity can they maybe apply the same rigor to maintaining the purity of their food prep areas? Still think someone should report them for the state of that kitchen. If it's a private kitchen, fine, but if they're charging people money then they need to keep it clean.

Also what Aspie said - if they intend to exclude anyone who's not fully supportive of everything the kind of people who call women T*RFS believe then their customer base is going to be a bit limited.

adulthumanandtired · 22/10/2018 06:51

This is hardly surprising.
Goldsmiths University - right in the heart of Deptford(lampposts are festooned with Goldsmith banners) is the employer of Natascha Kennedy who was outed in the Times as having orchestrated the campaign to rid academia of feminist faculty staff with wrong-think. I didn’t hear of any fallout after that story broke.
A certain LM is apparently also now attending there, so it wouldn’t be unusual to see further activities like this in the Deptford area.

Needmoresleep · 22/10/2018 09:33

Perhaps the purity test is in the form of seeing if women customers are compliant, nice and kind. So they sit you at the table by the door, of the one that has not been cleared, then make you wait ages for service whilst they serve any men/trans. Women who are apologetic as if they are asking for a favour, are OK, those who are gobby and effectively demand equal treatment fail the terf-test.

This is local to me. What has really upset me is Venice posted the picture on a local FB group and all of the replies were 100% against her and in favour of the sign. This is not a studenty FB group either. I was horrified. They (without irony) described the sign as being 'about equality'. Very much reflecting what Jane Clare Jones said on Twitter: they find supporting trans and attacking women indistinguishable. I complained to the admin (who to his credit had already blocked further comments) and left the group. It's definitely made me rethink my attitude to my local community!

AngryAttackKittens · 22/10/2018 09:41

And then they bring you a salad with bugs in it, and wait to see if you send it back or if you meekly attempt to eat around it and pay and leave without even mentioning it.

AAK...and leave a tip!

hackmum · 22/10/2018 09:53

It's such a bizarre thing for a business to do. Generally, as a business you welcome everyone who comes in unless they're violent or aggressive or don't pay their bills. And that's partly because it's illegal to discriminate on grounds of race, sex, sexuality, religion etc, and partly because who cares what someone's political opinions are as long as they hand over their money? You'd be completely mad as a business to say "We're not going to serve Tories" or "We're not going to serve homophobes."

And isn't it striking that they singled out "Terfs"? The unavoidable conclusion is they would welcome anyone else, including fascists, but they don't want gender-critical feminists.

howlsmovingcastle84 · 22/10/2018 10:27

So I'm guessing we shouldn't hold our GC book club at this cafe?

PackingSoap · 22/10/2018 11:15

"Trans exclusionary people" pretty much includes every conservative adherent to a world religion, and a fair few liberal adherents too.

My Mil is trans-exclusionary in the sense that she would not accept being in a state of nudity while changing in a room with a male-bodied individual that wasn't her husband. That's a fairly common attitude amongst Arab women of her generation (and indeed most women of her generation, regardless of their ethnic or cultural heritage).

So is she not welcome at this cafe? Because this sign starts to look a lot like covert discrimination if so. They are stating they will refuse to welcome people from certain ethnic and religious backgrounds, purely on the grounds of what they believe about sex and gender.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/10/2018 11:23

Packing soap - well I fit that criteria, as do my daughters and did my Mum . None of us would strip off in front of random men. I can’t think of any women who would tbh.
