Girls made to wear skirts

Having been 'corrected' by Owl and Fox over my observation all girls we saw in Butterfly were wearing skirts, the comeback is that the school were making them do so as part of the uniform. Really? Can a state school in this day and age still have such a rule? We had these battles in the 90s and won (when the trans thing wasn't even on the radar) and I thought only private or all girls schools could have skirt only uniforms now. My DDs have both trousers and skirt and decided each day. There are pros and cons to both.

I know of a private mixed school where the girls have to wear skirts

Seneca, what's your sexism argument? I may need it in a few years' time!

It's sexist because it reinforces gender stereotypes. It's immaterial whether there are boys there.

Ah I see, will give it my best shot. Hoping someone else will fight it before we get there. The boys' equivalent is just as bad, they're not allowed long hairShock

In NI girls have to wear skirts! Never seen a girl in trousers

Please correct me if wrong!

LizzieSiddal · 22/10/2018 00:00

Our local school doesn’t even refer to the uniform as for girl/boys. It just lists the items they can all choose from.

I saw a beautiful small schoolchild the other week in London, shoulder length hair tucked behind ears, blazer and trousers, in the nicest possible way it wasn’t really apparent whether they were a boy or a girl, I was just like, this is surely a good outcome for lots of children.

Threads crop up quite regularly on MN about girls not being allowed to wear trousers to school - particularly in the winter when it's freezing and they want to wear nice warm trousers but instead have to wear skirts and thin tights...

Then there are plenty in the summer about having to wear a blazer/long trousers/etc when it's stifflingly hot or not having a summer uniform.

catkind · 22/10/2018 13:17

Indeed Rosa. School uniform should be designed to allow enough flexibility for kids to be comfortable whatever the weather. The enforced blazer/jumper wearing thing in summer strikes me as downright barbaric.

I never bothered with tights in winter. I cycled to school.
Uniform should be trousers or skirts for boys and girls. Ties/blazers or not for all. No differences.
No compulsion to wear tights with skirts either.
