It’s worth clicking on to read the comments.

Like merrymouse said, I'd say Jennifer Wagner-Assali has played this well in adopting the moral high ground. This gives her more freedom to say that the system is shit while insulating herself from (rational) criticism that she's being a sore loser.

But I doubt she was expecting the bonus of the petulant response from McKinnon. This is so incredibly telling.

Chalkhillblu3 · 20/10/2018 22:55

Bunce finds time to volunteer with 'trans' kids but doesn't do jack shit for equal pay. Doesn't need to, he/she is being paid as a man.

adulthumanandtired · 20/10/2018 22:58

The money in sport usually comes from sponsorship. I wonder what sponsors will make of this in due course, when they are trying to sell sports clothing and goods to female consumers but the competitors are increasingly male born.

StormCloudsDoClear · 20/10/2018 23:10

I come from a competive sporting background, was part of a Olympic development squad till catastrophic injury ended my sporting career, I can hand on heart tell you I would have protested on the podium.

I simply wouldn't have accepted 3rd place and left the podium space blank.

If I had to compete against biological males, I'd loose every time.

This needs to stop, for all our future aspiring female athletes, this needs to stop now. Getting girls in to sports is hard enough, we can't have them deciding to not bother from the beginning because the boys will take over and win.

Sport teaches so many good qualities and life lessons, women shouldn't be forced out by biological men exclaiming they are women!

This makes me so angry.

whereisthatpenguinfrom · 20/10/2018 23:15

in that video the commentator sounds like they are doing their best to convey their disgust through their tone, no?

AspieAndProud · 20/10/2018 23:21

Maybe they hope they can recoup their losses selling lady jockstraps.

noeffingidea · 20/10/2018 23:34

It's so good to see that the general public is behind the female competitors. That must give them a bit more confidence for when they feel ready to protest.
StormClouds you're right, but I think it needs to be a mass boycott. People are starting to speak up, but it would be much more effective if every woman sat down at the start of the race or something.
The governing bodies are responsible here. They should have said No at the outset, and stuck to it. It doesn't require a degree in sports science to know that women cannot compete equally with men in most sports. It's just basic knowledge. Just like the prison service knew that sexual predators would identify as trans to gain access to women's prisons. It was easily predictable, but they went ahead and did it anyway. Unforgivable in both cases.

LillyoftheCentralValley · 20/10/2018 23:44

The reason women's sports have funding is because some Congressmen added "sex" to the proposed Title 9 bill in order to get it defeated. Ever since, male sports organizations have been trying very hard to get it repealed, and have all, say college funding, go to men's football.

I hope they sent McKinnon very nice thank cards for the effort McKinnon has made on their behalf.

LillyoftheCentralValley · 20/10/2018 23:44

correction "women's sports in the US"

AspieAndProud · 21/10/2018 00:07

Maybe women athletes need to follow the example of US NFL players and ‘take the knee’.

This was a protest against police brutality. Players would kneel during the national anthem instead of standing to attention.

The women’s campaign might have to take a different form but there must be some shared symbolic gesture they can make.

StormCloudsDoClear · 21/10/2018 00:14

@Aspie the best way as a sports person who wants to keep competing, get their international rankings and continue is to protest on the podium.

There are no rules really about conduct on the podium, remember the black power salute?

Female athletes could do the same, not take to the podium when a transwoman wins, basically leaving that person alone on the podium and unable to celebrate.

Refusal to race/compete would affect their careers.

Turph · 21/10/2018 00:59

The Australian guy on the podium with them got deselected and had a load of hassle, ending his career early. Sad

will be interesting to see how this pans out...

www.uci.org/inside-uci/press-releases/uci-statement-on-transgender-men-women-athlete's-eligibility

The Union Cycliste Internationale has taken note of the discussions over the last few days concerning the eligibility of transgender Men-Women (M-W) to race against women.

The debate comes after the victory of the Canadian transgender athlete Rachel McKinnon in a women’s event at the 2018 UCI Masters Track Cycling World Championships in Los Angeles (USA).

Although there are no queries concerning Women-Men (W-M) transgender athletes, whose situation – at UCI level as for all International Federations (IF) – is controlled by therapeutic use exemptions (TUE), the current situation concerns M-W transgenders.

After some 18 months of substantial work, and after consultation with the IFs, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should shortly announce guidelines covering the participation of M-W transgender athletes. This document should enable us to take into consideration, in line with the evolution of our society, the desire of these people to compete while at the same time guarantee as far as possible an equal chance for all participants in women’s competitions.

The UCI will adapt its regulations according to the guidelines of the IOC.

Iused2BanOptimist · 21/10/2018 10:48

I think Take the knee would be a great protest except perhaps it would be misconstrued because it has been used already as a different protest. A curtesy would be an excellent use of irony but people probably wouldn't get it. I certainly wouldn't pose for a photo in a group hug. Standing apart and refusing physical contact would be a good place to start.
Part of the problem though is that some women competitors seem to have drunk the Koolaid. I read the woman who came second to Rach was fully supportive and somewhat dismissive of Jen Wagner-Assali and her objections.
I fear this has to get much worse before it gets better if there are women who apparently think it's fine, TWAW and all that.

StormCloudsDoClear · 21/10/2018 10:57

Rumour has it the IOC are about to take a stance and say no, not allowed to compete in women's events but it's just a rumour.

I know some top level figure skaters have objected massively as it would push top female skaters and pairs out of medal places.

arranfan · 21/10/2018 10:59

I was thinking the women could lie across the feet of McKinnon/whomever and adopt a lowly supplicant's position as befits their placings on the medal table, grateful for any scraps. The table they'd have been higher up had it not been for the superior skill of McKinnon/whomever nothing to do with testosterone, anatomy, physiology, more favourable body composition, no, not all at all

Kr1stina · 21/10/2018 10:59

Sports people are bound by the rules of their governing body. If they protest in any way they will be deselected from their team or not allowed to compete.

That’s why the woman who was third will have apologised. Not because she wanted to or because of social media. She will have been forcedto do so or face disciplinary action.

Needmoresleep · 21/10/2018 11:10

"Rumour has it the IOC are about to take a stance and say no"

I hope so. The IOC has traditionally worked for good participation from outside the developed world. And would presumably not want, say, Muslim women to refuse to compete. Or the athletes/swimmers from non tranditional courties, who have much slower qualifying times, to be dominated by natal men.

The issue for some sports in the west, will be that access to good training facilities and coaching is limited to those selected to talent pathways. You cannot demand that youth athletes take hormones. Inevitably talented girls will be displaced by mediocre boys, and so wont have access to pathway training. The approach is normally to start with an Olympic medal target and work back, with funding being allocated accordingly. The choice for sports bodies will be to look woke and lose funding, or to prioritise those with XX chromosomes. The Government needs to lead and Sport England to provide guidance. And not leave advice to bloody Stonewall.

hackmum · 21/10/2018 11:10

I was listening this morning to an excerpt from a new book about swimming. The excerpt was about the introduction of polyurethane swimming suits, and how they streamlined the body's movement in water so effectively that they resulted in a number of world records being smashed. They were massively controversial, and after two years they were banned.

I would love someone to explain to me how a technological innovation that delivers an improvement in speed is so scandalous that it must be banned, but a man is allowed to participate in a women's competition? How does that work?

arranfan · 21/10/2018 11:17

I can't save graphics on this set-up - but this meme would be worth posting as it says so much.

This Is Not Progress: give athletics back to the boys

Needmoresleep · 21/10/2018 11:22

hackmum, the suits were very expensive and did not last more than a few meets, yet 10 year olds started turning up to galas in them.

Now males are not allowed trunks below the knee or above the waist. (The time differences are so small that it is normal for competitive males to shave legs and chest.) Interesting what they will do with transmen, should any want to compete. (Which they should, because sport is a good thng, but being on a hiding to nothing will be a deterrent.)

SharpLily · 21/10/2018 11:40

I've tried not to pay too much attention to the whole trans drama going on because I think I felt the whole thing was a bit ridiculous and would play itself out before long - after all it's about as credible as saying Rachel Dolezal is black.

However reading that Daily Mail article I suddenly felt myself boiling with indignation at the use of the term 'cis-woman', in a way I never have before. I am not a fucking cis-woman, I'm just a woman. Feel free to be a trans-woman all you like, as is your right, but do not impinge upon my womanhood. Fucking idiots everywhere.

FlaviaAlbia · 21/10/2018 11:56

I thiin sport the unfairness is so clear cut you see it for what it is.

Have you filled in the government consultation Lily? It's extended till tomorrow I think so if you want to protest against self ID , you can do it in one click from here fairplayforwomen.com/email/

BloodyDraculcasonthis · 21/10/2018 11:59

Feel free to be a trans-woman all you like, as is your right, but do not impinge upon my womanhood

They don't want to impinge, they want to relieve you of it completely and take it for their own.
They want to be the winners in womens sports, awardees in womens business, takeover women's safe spaces, be jailed with women and have people arrested for not going along with it.

Needmoresleep · 21/10/2018 12:12

Lily. You dont have to answer every question.

If you know people who want to save womens sport just ask them to respond to Qu12.
