Trans activists smoke bomb protest the metro

Jim Waterson
@jimwaterson
Trans activists have set off smoke bombs outside the entrance to Northcliffe House, HQ of the Daily Mail/Metro/Independent. Unclear if they're protesting against the Mail - or the Metro taking the advert last week - but staff leaving by side entrance.

Consensus seems to be they're protesting against The Metro, which took an anti-trans ad last week. Unfortunately Metro print edition staff don't work Fridays. (The entirely separate Metro website has also had some trouble over the sister paper taking the ad, apparently.)

I wonder if all the companies backing that Stonewall advert are suddenly wondering who it is they were actually supporting here.

Carrrotsandcauliflower · 20/10/2018 10:28

I worked in central London for years, and I can honestly say if that had been my office or next door I’d have been shitting it. Sorry but I would, anything like that gives me the jitters after 7/7. It’s intimidation. I can’t find it in any real news today.

Gncq · 20/10/2018 10:29

Am I wrong, but I thought The Metro only printed Mon-Fri and had weekends off. Maybe they'll print something on Monday?
I'd like to think The Mail are preparing for a Sunday Mail article, but I have a sinking feeling not to get my hopes up for some reason.

deepwatersolo · 20/10/2018 10:30

No. I could swear I saw an independent article link on Twitter but cannot find it now. Must have dreamed it.

JoanSummers · 20/10/2018 10:32

I'm also hoping for something in the Sunday papers.

kayaking · 20/10/2018 10:33

It was on the independent twitter with a short video.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 20/10/2018 10:33

Where did you hear of mistery person in parliament pushing this Kirk?

David Davies. He said there's someone in parliament adamant on pushing self ID through and it's someone you'd not expect.

Gncq · 20/10/2018 10:33

The thing is Datun the "they made me do it" and "poor, most vulnerable, suicidal" narrative is so strong, the TRA gain sympathy for all of their aggression. People see it as a "cry for help so we must help them more"

If Corbyn/LB had anything to say it would be "we need to listen" and just pay them more attention and probably hand them more smoke bombs.

Those companies backing Stonewall aren't just suddenly going to admit they were wrong like that.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 20/10/2018 10:35

Nope but more and more of the public realise what is happening.

BigotedWoman · 20/10/2018 10:36

I think David Davies said another Conservative MP threatened to report him to the police. James Kirkup said someone in the cabinet is determined to push self-ID through and it's not who you might think.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 20/10/2018 10:37

Ah okay.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 20/10/2018 10:38

I merged the two

deepwatersolo · 20/10/2018 10:38

Thanks kayaking I started to feel a tad insane (and my Twitter won‘t load to check out whether my memory was right).

Kirk interesting, but strange that Davies won‘t name names. I mean, said person would surely stand by their position to support the stunning and brave, right?

deepwatersolo · 20/10/2018 10:38

Ah Kirkup. Ok. Still, you‘d think said person could be named?

Datun · 20/10/2018 10:40

I agree, but as their 'body of work' increases and builds up, it holds less and less water.

And when mainstream media can point to a veritable litany of aggressive acts, it becomes harder to maintain the victim status.

rightreckoner · 20/10/2018 10:43

I wonder if this was smarter than we think. It was an attack on Metro but there won’t be an edition till Monday by which time it will be old news. I’d be surprised if they cover it by then. So it’s true intimidation - without publicity to shine a spotlight on it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/10/2018 10:46

Not particularly smart given metro staff weren't there but Mail staff were.

arranfan · 20/10/2018 11:21

Mainstream media haven't yet put together a policy to deal with a substantial group of entitled narcissists claiming victimhood. They need to talk to an organisation like Glasgow Media Group and discuss what's happening.

Another shoutout to Andy Lewis aka @lecanardnoir123 for this observation:

Be careful not to assume that the group of people who appear to have suffered the greatest injustices are those that actually have. The narcissistic rage of the entitled will always be louder than the cries of the oppressed.

That was the idea, but the consultation was extended to monday, so it backfired.

FekkoTheLawyer · 20/10/2018 11:29

There people fontoactually read newspapers. If it's over 280 characters (or isn't a meme) they can't focus.

Janie143 · 20/10/2018 11:50

I'm hoping there is a good reason for the silence

FekkoTheLawyer · 20/10/2018 11:53

Bugger news maybe? A few nuts whinging (the really hyper person jumping around like a kid on Sunny Delight - is that the creature who whalloped Maria?) isn't much compared to a journalist being murdered.

FoldyRoll · 20/10/2018 12:11

It doesn't really matter if it's not reported. It's small beans really. No one was hurt, and a public who distrust journalists would roll their eyes at them pearl clutching about a bit of coloured smoke (no matter how scared people in Northcliffe House may or may not have been scared).

However if I was a journalist who was significantly delayed in getting my after work pint on a Friday afternoon by a bunch of blokes in Tesco Free From dresses playing shit 90's MOR and spraying blue smoke around, then I may very well find that any sympathy I may have previously had with their position evaporated and I may want to serve my revenge cold, in many sly digs in many articles over many months, which as the DM know is a far better way to manipulate public opinion than a single ranty piece.

You don't get between hacks and booze. You just don't. It's like getting between a hungry pregnant woman and the buffet table. The vengeance will be a sight to behold.

I would also marvel at how fucking thick you are to a) think staff on a Mon-Fri morning paper would be there on a Friday afternoon and b) consider posters, stickers and leaflets literal violence and actual violence 'pretty chill'.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/10/2018 12:18

Exactly Foldy.
Also, it's not just getting between journalists and booze, it's getting between staff in all roles and their picking their kids up from nursery on time. Getting stuck in work can be a massive, expensive, stressful pain in the arse these days.

FoldyRoll · 20/10/2018 12:35

Agreed, Countess. Unfortunately those people are less able to make their voices clearly heard.

That's the thing about TRAs. They are so self obsessed, they have no idea that they're pissing people off left, right and centre, for reasons that would not occur to them in a million years.
