This is really cheering, thank you to this MP.

Is he conservative?

Redkeyboard · 19/10/2018 01:04

Yes. West Yorkshire.

I just quickly googled him - he's the most rebellious serving Conservative MP, having voted against the whip over 250 times. Guessing he's not that bothered about toeing the party line!

Last week I posted about my MP sending me a v strongly worded letter opposing the reforms: still nothing from him in public though. Word has it that he's using Brexit to try and get a knighthood at the moment so I guess he's got more important things on his plate 🙄

I'm so tempted to post the letter on Twitter: our elected representatives should bloody well represent us!

CecilyNeville · 19/10/2018 01:21

He's the one Sophie Walker stood against for WEP at the GE, as he has a terrible record against women's rights. He's an MRA.

Redkeyboard · 19/10/2018 01:31

Really Cecily? What has he done?

Am finding it an odd world these days where it’s Tory MPs with no track record on women’s rights who are standing up for women while lefties like OJ laugh and taunt at vulnerable women.

WTF is going on.

OP posts:
SturdyEarmuffs · 19/10/2018 01:36

If he's the MRA twat MP I'm thinking of, he's no ally to women.

ohello · 19/10/2018 01:40

Redkeyboard Conservatives tend to think of women as private property (available to only one man) while liberals tend to think of women as public property (women should make ourselves available to anyone who wants us).

Redkeyboard · 19/10/2018 01:42

Great it seems we are stuck between a rock and s hard place.

In any case I am glad one of the two options has actually said something in defence of women sexually attacked in prison by a rapist. Small mercies?

This man is literally an MRA. He's really unpleasant - the infamous fiilbusterer. He has filibustered legislation to protect women, and stopped it going through in the past. He also filibustered the bill for free hospital parking, iirc. He tried to filibuster a law to protect women from dv a few year ago (but failed) - just because it had the word "woman" in the title - which he claimed was sexist.

The world has gone truly mad when he sticks up for women. Confused

We should be worried. Very, very worried.

GiantKitten · 19/10/2018 03:32

He’s an awful man.

Also he is Esther McVey’s partner.

A perfect match.

SophoclesTheFox · 19/10/2018 06:12

Hard to believe that he’s motivated by a late flowering concern for women- not something he’s generally known for!

These are weird times indeed

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 19/10/2018 06:29

Maybe his line in the sand is women and girls being raped?

Controversial, as it seems to be an acceptable cost for many.

freakinbananaspiders · 19/10/2018 06:33

He's a truly odious man. Votes against gay rights, animal rights, usually women, environmental concerns etc. And as other posters have said he will often actively make sure these legislations are stopped by filibustering. For example on the law banning animals in circuses.
It makes me sad such a human is on the planet never mind an MP.
There have been many plans to oust him and hopefully they will succeed at the next election.
Interesting about Esther McVey though I didn't know that. He's deeply unattractive.

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 19/10/2018 07:04

He's a truly odious man

Probably, and so are all the men who redefine the words women and girl to include any male person. The men who decide that women and girls don't get to consent to who is in female spaces are odious, too.

Men who know that other men will use any tactic to rape and abuse women and girls, but say it's a very small risk, are odious.

There are lots of odious men out there. But at least this one seems to find the raping of women and girls odious.

So what. Harrop and OJ are odious men too,. Plenty of examples on both sides.

Don't shoot the messenger.

BumbrainusMaximus · 19/10/2018 07:14

Nicely put Sarah j
There are lots of mps who see the problem but won’t say anything. His USP with his constituency is his willingness to disregard PC - so for him honesty is a political win.
My own mp has a rock solid Tory majority of 26000 and yet says nothing. Horrible to feel that Philip Davies is actually braver than him.

ToeToToe · 19/10/2018 07:33

Personally, I'm just happy that another MP has spoken out.

My point was - we should be fucking worried that when even mens-rightsy Philip can see the risks for women, the risks for women are very, very real.

The salient question here is why aren't other MPs speaking out?

Karachii · 19/10/2018 07:41

Philip Davis is not a reassuring ally - he is a massive misogynist.

He's an attention seeker and a traditionalist which is why he's doing this. I suspect his support will be actively unhelpful.

pennydrew · 19/10/2018 07:47

Probably, and so are all the men who redefine the words women and girl to include any male person

^ the left wing misogynists are worse in my eyes. They hide amongst us.

FermatsTheorem · 19/10/2018 07:58

Yup, my take on this is that PD is a really unpleasant raging misogynist - so if even he is prepared to say this is detrimental to women and girls, then the proposal to place men in women's prisons is off-the-scale misogyny.

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 19/10/2018 08:26

He's an attention seeker and a traditionalist which is why he's doing this. I suspect his support will be actively unhelpful.

I do think feminism is held to much higher standard than men's and trans right organisations. Having rape apologists supporting their cause doesn't seem to be unhelpful to those who want to erode women's rights.

LangCleg · 19/10/2018 08:52

I know someone in his constituency and my understanding is that his objection is real. This constituent of his would agree with Toe to Toe - we should be fucking worried that when even mens-rightsy Philip can see the risks for women.

Avegemitesandwich · 19/10/2018 08:54

This is the guy who blocked the upskirting bill isn't it?
