Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So Women's Hour can't cover self-id properly but can manage stripping and burlesque with no problem

The irony - Woman's Hour failed to start with women at the heart of their coverage yet less than half an hour later has no problem managing to do a coherent and detailed programme about stripping and burlesque with.....you guessed it....lots of women talking - because of course they are qualified to talk about stripping and burlesque.

Yes. Ugh. The continuity woman sounded very slightly irritated when she announced the programme.

Melamin · 16/10/2018 11:45

Always room in the schedules for a bit of titillation. Hmm

Budgieinaberet · 16/10/2018 11:46

I have emailed about the GRA segment.
The Irish journalist was a waste of time
The Rabbi was a waste of time my daughter is so special
Bex Stenson was well BS
And the person who didn't even seem to know what her job was, was dreadful.
Then there was Dr Nic Gin
I hope that the BBC staff are hanging their heads in shame

WokerThanWoke · 16/10/2018 11:46

Good to see their priorities are right.

getitnow · 16/10/2018 11:48

Thank you for posting this -

Yes yes yes

If you want to speak about entertaining others - getting naked to do so, erotic dancer then you get to speak and go on and on ... but if you want to bring up
women
safety
single sex spaces
Women in sport
Men in female prisons ...

Well no just no but if you want to speak about how you move your body and wear high heels then yep they will find the time for you...

This stripping prog is dire, but nothing to do with woman's hour, OP - it's another programme an hour later on the R4 schedule.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 16/10/2018 11:55

The car alarm fan dance. Jesus.

MrsFogi · 16/10/2018 11:57

I disagree JeanMichelB - R4 has singularly failed to cover the issue of self-id yet seems to have time for many other less pressing programmes (such as this). WH has been asked repeatedly to cover the issue but has not done so until the week the consultation closes (and even then has done a useless job of its coverage). I think that BBC R4's "progressiveness" may be dictating how they allocate time and women are certainly not getting much of it (unless it is about subjects like stripping).

Now someone speaking about putting her body hair on stage...

Someone now speaking about how people expect her to do the weird stuff....

Someone talking about how you don't always have to wear a lipstick...

I think the irony is just the time given now as opposed to how women can't really get any proper airtime on the bbc raising gender critical issues.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 16/10/2018 12:01

I agree, OP - but your opening post makes it sound as if this stuuuuupid piece on burlesque is part of woman's hour - which it's just not. It's separate scheduling, which i agree arguably shows R4 priorities overall. I was just pointing out that castigating WH for the burlesque prog is incorrect.

MrsFogi · 16/10/2018 12:14

Ah yes sorry JMB my op is not brilliantly worded - I'm still a bit riled by the WH travesty so a bit trigger happy (you should see my twitter account Grin)

Smile no probs!

FoldyRoll · 16/10/2018 12:39

Heard the last bit of that stripping programme. Fuck me it was bad. Usual shite about how queer and radical it is not to always wear high heels or gasp! occasionally go without make up.
Ok, we get it Radio 4. We know our place.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 16/10/2018 13:00

Like one of the contributors, I'm queer despite being married - I haven't shaved my legs in a couple of days [shuffles off to do a radically sexy dance to the sound of a train going past or summat].

Quite looking forward to the Feedback edition that has to deal with this - I want to hear Roger Bolton quote bits Grin

WomanDictionaryDefined · 16/10/2018 14:03

BBC misogynistic bullshit denigrates women again. Shocked not.
