Does anyone have any idea what this is about?

I am trying to imagine a cross party policy meeting with Penny Mordaunt, Dawn Butler, and Sarah Champion.

Zinging debate? Stonewall to take the minutes?

R0wantrees · 15/10/2018 08:54

Its good to know that Sarah Champion has been briefed and lobbied by Mermaids Charity.

I think the more that MPs are open about the 'experts' they have been so influenced by the better.

But I don’t really understand what the point of her saying that is? We know that males are XY, and females are XX, and the rest is due to us being human, but so what? Even if what she said was true, what is her point?

Ah those believers in unlimited technological feasibility. Funny enough, they are rarely scientists.
You know, with the advent of CRISP and vectors that can inect all cells in a body, you could in theory somewhen in the future maybe really rewrite every single cell in your DNA, and I feel some get obsessed with these type of ideas. Ironically, your sex organs, formed in utero, would still not transform after such a 'therapy'. You'd still always be able to tell whether the person was born a boy or a girl.

Ereshkigal · 15/10/2018 08:59

She tried to point out the awkward existence of chromosomes.

Chromosomes are a social construct.

HamiltonCork · 15/10/2018 09:06

You'd think she would delete that tweet. I'm embarrassed for her.

Melamin · 15/10/2018 09:47

I can't believe anyone can be so stupid. Especially an MP.

I mean, I thought there were a lot of daft ones, uninformed ones and prejudiced ones. etc.

This is fundamentally thick.

Datun · 15/10/2018 10:22

There is an incredibly worrying tweet further down that thread. From someone who supports trans children and parents. And claims that puberty blockers are used to stop pregnancy in eight year olds.

AncientLights · 15/10/2018 10:30

Puberty blockers will stop pregnancy in 8 year olds, in the sense that they stop puberty therefore the girl is too immature to conceive. That's what they are used for in girls: to stop precocious puberty (work in both sexes but obvs with boys you don't have the dreadful fact of a pregnant 8 year old). It seems to have been the main reason so many girls were given it in the US and they now have medical problems. BTW I am absolutely not saying give this to girls as a contraceptive, it's a totally different thing.

Datun · 15/10/2018 10:33

Yes, but I don't think that's what he said

prevent unwanted pregnancies when they are 8 or 9 years old and to allow them to have a normal childhood?

hackmum · 15/10/2018 10:33

I'm absolutely appalled at the ignorance. I've read the tweet several times now and I still don't know what she thinks she's getting at. So she's met two people whose parents were given a choice of drugs. Who are these two people? If they're "people" (rather than children), presumably they're adults? So, say, 18 years ago there was a major scientific breakthrough that enabled "parents" (does she mean men or women? before they were pregnant or once they were pregnant?) to choose the sex of their baby? And somehow this major scientific breakthrough went unreported?

"One chromosome makes the difference between a penis/clitoris." Does she understand what a chromosome does? At what point does she imagine the drug is changing the unborn baby's chromosomes?

Last question: how on earth did this utter ignoramus end up becoming a member of parliament?

"Just focusing on the medical, I’ve now met two people whose parents were given the choice of drugs to “make” their child a boy or girl. One chromosome makes the difference between a penis/clitoris."

Datun · 15/10/2018 10:34

Oh, I see what you mean. If they were going through puberty too early.

Still, he should be more concerned with an eight-year-old having sex, than promoting puberty blockers, surely.

TheQueef · 15/10/2018 10:40

I feel a bit sorry for Sarah.
She's being hauled out to support Hampshire constab offending leaflets for CSE so it's possible this gender row isn't the main row she's fielding.

bellinisurge · 15/10/2018 10:43

She's an idiot.

Trousered · 15/10/2018 10:46

Where to start with this apparent gotcha? This ghastly person clearly believes they have the moral high ground with this statement.

Hi Yvonne - just wondering if you have any objections to prepubescent girls who are given these blockers to prevent unwanted pregnancies when they are 8 or 9 years old and to allow them to have a normal childhood?

Yes we do have an objection to you proposing drugs to prevent pregnancies in 8 to 9 year olds. I'm also very concerned that you have any access to children at all if you make statements like that.

FloralBunting · 15/10/2018 10:50

The weird comment about 8 or 9 year old girls becoming pregnant through precocious puberty is possibly one of the creepiest I've read for some time.

The commenter thinks they are being socially responsible by bringing up the spectre of child pregnancy, but actually they are revealing some very unpleasant assumptions they have made about the onset of puberty and the sudden sexual availability of a woman (who is clearly still a child)

Dangerous person. Thinks 8 or 9 years olds need drugs to protect against pregnancy.

Datun · 15/10/2018 11:02

What is a trans supporter doing conflating trans with precocious puberty?

Puberty blockers for trans children have nothing to do with precocious puberty.

Ugh.

bellinisurge · 15/10/2018 11:03

Yes, give kids pills. That's the solution to everything Confused

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 15/10/2018 11:05

Fuck off, Sarah.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 15/10/2018 11:07

I can't believe anyone can be so stupid. Especially an MP.

Where I am from there is a standing joke that if you take the civil service exam and fail it, you get a job at the local Lost & Found.

It sounds like Sarah Champion failed the test to get a job at the local Lost & Found. It's the only explanation as to why someone can be so stupid.

arranfan · 15/10/2018 11:10

I've known parents select puberty blockers as a delaying tactic for girls who've had the menarche at 8 - in a school/general environment that is not set up for girls that age to have to cope with it.

And also because for some it's a risk benefit trade-off depending on the history of female cancers in the family as more menstrual cycles (taken as a proxy for hormone fluctuations) are associated with greater risk of female cancers.

Thinkingofausername1 · 15/10/2018 11:54

I'm not even going to read the link as it will make me cross. What ever happened to I just want it to be healthy? Why can't these people find drugs to cure cancer instead ffs.
