Hi all

My MP has basically said not to worry as the Equality Act isn't changing so transgender people won't be able to access single sex services unless they have legally changed gender. But...if people can self identify??

He said he's not going to the meeting about the impact of changes to the GRA on women's rights next week because he's not worried. He said women's refuges can reply to the consultation too.

Confused.

Face to face meeting is your best bet - it's a lot harder for them to wriggle out of logic when faced with someone with Hmm look on their face.

But you're his constituent and you're worried. And asking him to go!

RepealtheGRA · 12/10/2018 18:22

Ring him!

WarmWishes · 12/10/2018 18:23

Go to his surgery. Get everyone you know to do the same. Send the mp's response to the local mosque & synagogues too. I assume it's legal to share the letter?

WarmWishes · 12/10/2018 18:25

Make sure the mp knows the electorate is going to hold them to account but try & do it without backing them into a corner.

Send him the FPFW report from professionals in refuges who say they can’t even discuss using the exemptions for fear of losing their jobs. Ask him what he and the government are doing to make sure their voices are safely heard in the consultation

The letter has lots of paragraphs telling me why transgender people need the GRA consultation. Then one paragraph telling me not to worry, that he's not worried, the Equality Act will protect women and that Act isn't changing so he's not going to the meeting.

My letter to him (via email) basically outlined a number of concerns, then asked if he would please go so that he could be informed about the issues and allay my fears or not, based on the meeting.

I'm actually in the beginning stages of leaving my husband in very sad circumstances so I don't have the headspace or if I'm honest have no self esteem/confidence for a face to face meeting. Hence I emailed.

But I'm now more confused than ever!

Is it appropriate to send him a follow up email with some of the points on here?

Definitely appropriate to email him again. They are our elected representatives. We should ALL be emailing them daily at this point. They are letting down children, they are letting down women, they are letting down transsexuals who never asked for this shitstorm to be released and they are letting down freedom of speech, they are letting down democracy and they are letting down common sense and reality.

Send him Karen’s mugshot and ask him how the fuck he can NOT be worried.

The equality act will /is being rendered useless, its refers to sex, so if anyone can bet a new birth cert stating their new sex then its useless, yes it has exemptions, but they are being rode over now, due to pressure.

MP is being negligent if they are fobbing you off with that.

UpstartCrow · 12/10/2018 20:27

Ask him why the Equality Act doesn't just protect women only spaces and services, and make people who don't share the protected characteristic justify the fact they want to get in.

GulagsMyArse · 12/10/2018 21:03

•UpstartCrow• yes !
