MN wants our gender, not sex

I just discovered that on the 'About You' page under Settings that we have a space to enter our gender, and that of our children..

We have the choice of: male, female, unspecified.
For our kids, we have: boy, girl

(the details on the photos are not my real info)

Prudish copywriting. Again.

GraceTheDisgrace · 12/10/2018 15:34

I just signed up for my account today after lurking on FWR for a bit and I was a bit surprised to see that I was asked to give my gender as part of registration.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 12/10/2018 15:41

Something like this doesn't really matter does it, Mumsnet have no power to check things so people will lie.

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 12/10/2018 15:45

At one point a couple of years ago MN did agree that "gender:male or female" was incorrect and said they were going to change it.

Must be on the bottom of their to do list.

NopeNi · 12/10/2018 15:48

I wonder why they even ask. Must be for ad sales.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 12/10/2018 15:51

I don't think you even have to answer.

GraceTheDisgrace · 12/10/2018 15:54

I don't think you even have to answer.

That's right, it tells you quite clearly that it's optional to answer. I left it blank as I don't buy into gender.

Barracker · 12/10/2018 16:23

I asked about this a very long time ago.

At this point, now that we have GDPR, I've decided upon the following course of action. I'll start a new thread on this, I think.

Dear @MNHQ. I do not have any gender, because as I'm sure you know, I don't believe in gender as a characteristic that people 'have', only as a stereotypical role people of a sex are expected to perform.

Therefore, as you currently hold some 'gender' data on me that states:
Barracker, Gender = Female
AND as that data is both false and I do not consent for you to hold it, please delete that specific piece of data from my personal information at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

(If you would care to capture data on my biological sex, I would be delighted to offer you that data. Do let me know as soon as you create a field to capture my sex data. This should also assist you if you intend to monitor or analyse data on the Equality Act 2010 regarding the protected characteristic sex.)

Warmest regards

Barracker x

Gender and sex are interchangeable both in law, reality and how people use those terms in reference to humans.

Trans woman are women. Trans women are adult human females. Non trans women are cis women.

MonsterSister · 12/10/2018 17:01

Don't be daft, Notveryblissful. They wouldn't be trans if they were female Confused.

Plus, check the guidelines. Don't use 'cis'.

FloralBunting · 12/10/2018 17:03

Cor, that's a goady bastard thing to post, and there are so many goady posts nowadays. Non trans women are cis women, but transwomen are women?

Smh. Quite astonishing.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 12/10/2018 17:07

Notveryblissful they are NOT interchangeable in law.

How people choose to use them in reality varies a lot.

Some people think transwomen are women and transmen are men, some people don't.

HTH.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/10/2018 17:07

Ooh! Is that what passes for GF these days.

1/10

It is too transparent (no pun, really); simplistic and it just sits there, apropos of nothing. Bit like a sitting duck.

Please have a rethink and resubmit when you have come up with a better piece.

FlowerpotFairyHouse · 12/10/2018 17:07

Notveryblissful

I am not a "non trans woman".

I'm a woman.

That descriptor has served to describe me since I turned 18 and no one has ever been confused by it - everyone knows exactly what it means.

I'm not the c word either as I don't perform feminine gender stereotypes.

JellySlice · 12/10/2018 17:09

I frequently challenge this daft question, which appears on many MN surveys. WTF does 'other' mean?

MN wants our gender, not sex
IKeepFlouncing · 12/10/2018 17:12

This should go in site section also.

I agree I’m not identifiable by gender can gladly provide my birth certificate which is legal document that states I am a sex, which I will happy to submit on my profile

IKeepFlouncing · 12/10/2018 17:14

Jelly. Alien? That the only fucking other I know.

Have you cave MN to the cult?
