Photos from WPUK Events - should audience members be on Twitter?

InfidelForever · 11/10/2018 22:58

So here's the dilemma.

I went to a WPUK event a week or so ago and unbeknown to me my photograph was taken by a number of different people who were taking photos of the audience.

I know that the law does not protect me from infringement of privacy in public places but I am really not very happy at seeing my face splashed all over Twitter.

I have very good reasons for wishing to protect my privacy and think that the people who took the photos should respect this, however they have decided that they are not willing/able to do so.

I would welcome your thought as I was merely a driver for a couple of attendees to the event.

Thanks

I’d like to know who is doing this too please. If it’s someone purporting to be on our side, it’s indefensible. WPUK should also throw people out if they are taking photos of the audience. Perhaps have someone stationed at the back watching, if someone is taking photos, they need photographing for security purposes.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 12/10/2018 11:26

Honestly, it's very unlikely that anyone you know or who knows you will recognise you and do or think anything untoward.

It's a really bloody dick move to take photos at the meetings, especially when the reasons for not doing so are made crystal-clear each time. Such is the calibre of the people who oppose us. Shows them for the utter wankers they really are

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/10/2018 11:31

I would report the PM, and inform Twitter that you are seeking legal advice

gendercritter · 12/10/2018 11:51

The person sharing the photos could actually put someone at risk who isn't on 'our side'. Imagine going to a meeting because you passionately believe gc feminists are wrong and bad people and then have your face splashed all over twitter and get targeted.

Op i well understand your feelings. You jad every right to attend the meeting for whatever reason. This person is clearly trying to threaten and intimidate women.

UpstartCrow · 12/10/2018 12:38

@InfidelForever

I think you missed my last post and my PM message. Can you PM me the twitter handle of the account posting the photos please?

QuietContraryMary · 12/10/2018 13:26

As I understand it, hostile people could potentially buy tickets to these events. So it's hard to prevent this altogether, though people who share views should respect the wishes of people who do not want to be photographed.

InfidelForever · 12/10/2018 13:59

There are 2 people and two different images circulating on Twitter. I have contacted them both and asked the photos be removed but my requests have been met with some quite aggressive responses. There is no consideration for any of the other audience members whose livelihoods may into question for attending the meeting, just look at what is happening with Ann Henderson at Edinburgh University for daring to retweet about the House of Lords meeting. What is even more troubling that both Twitter users apparently are GC and supposedly care about the privacy and dignity of women and girls - their actions clearly do not support this.

Twitter users apparently are GC

Yeah i think they are lying

Would echo the report to twitter and contact WPUK and see if they can suggest anything. It may hold more sway on a legal basis

But there is probably nothing that can be done, really sorry this is happening to you

InfidelForever · 12/10/2018 20:31

I contacted Twitter but they have asked me to send a photo to confirm I am who I say I am, tin foil hat, this seems like entrapment

ClosdesMouches · 12/10/2018 21:21

When you reported to WPUK, what was their response?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/10/2018 21:30

A real cynic might think that a thread like this was posted to scare women and stop them going to meetings...

GenderApostate · 12/10/2018 22:02

There is no reason not to name the offending twitter accounts, if they actually exist.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 12/10/2018 22:16

Smile

I'm sure infidel will be back in a bit to tell us what WPUK said...i have every confidence

it crossed my mind

i've been to 2 WPUK meetings now

nobody took any pictures of the audience

I would expect that if infidel has contacted WPUK they are taking it very seriously

@infidelforever it would be great to hear an update on what WPUK said

InfidelForever · 12/10/2018 22:33

I just cannot believe some of the nasty and cynical comments, here is the response from WPUK via Facebook:

"We are quite clear about not taking photos inside our meetings. Who is sharing such photos?"

I gave WPUK the Twitter handle of the user who had shared the photos and I will most definitely not be attending in the future if this is the short of response from Mumsnetters who allegedly defend the privacy and dignity of women and girls

Would you like my CV so you can check out my credentials?

That's photo has been around for weeks, if you've had no come back so far I don't think you need to worry.

InfidelForever · 12/10/2018 22:43

Oh so that is ok in your book is it? The fact that I do not follow this individual and came across it by chance doesn't matter? The fact that I have been subjected to harassment doesn't matter - you are bloody hypocrites

OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/10/2018 22:43

I do agree people shouldn't be taking photos though.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/10/2018 22:50

I'm sorry someone took your picture and you don't like it

i think it's very unlikely that you will get any fall out

I'm pretty sure someone videoed me last week while i was out with my FPFW leaflets

i didn't like it but i didn't get worried as he's now the proud possessor of a 2 minute video of a random woman in the street

same applies here I would suggest

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 12/10/2018 22:51

Infidel, I appreciate you're worried, but quite honestly I can't see how anybody could recognise anyone from that photo.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 12/10/2018 23:01

I think the vast majority of posts have been sympathetic and helpful infidel

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 12/10/2018 23:03

I gave WPUK the Twitter handle of the user who had shared the photos and I will most definitely not be attending in the future if this is the short of response from Mumsnetters who allegedly defend the privacy and dignity of women and girls

And I appreciate you are upset but you shouldnt stop doing something because someone on mumsnet made a comment

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 12/10/2018 23:07

Off to bed

I hope you dont worry about this too much infidel

Its a horrible thing to have happened to you
