I’m a big fan of CM. Has she said anything about the GRA? I follow her on Twitter but I can’t recall anything.

No, she isn't.

ImDivingIn · 11/10/2018 10:19

Has she said anything either way?

It just seems a bit odd that she was a real ‘gateway’ feminist for lots of people and this is such a big issue, no matter what side you are on, you might expect her to comment.

For full disclosure I’m pretty GC myself.

She got absolutely pasted a few years ago for being "problematic" in various ways (a Twitter spat then used to imply she was racist and also some allegations of transphobia). I'm not surprised she keeps her mouth shut now.

SunflowerSally · 11/10/2018 10:26

I googled GC. It said it means " good condition ". I'd say Caitlin Moran is definitely in good condition.

terryleather · 11/10/2018 10:26

Every so often CM will get a mention on here and there will be speculation on her position wrt to having a GC viewpoint.

As far as I can see CM has libfem running through her like a stick of rock. If she came out as gender critical I would happily eat my hat, the big furry knitted one with the pom pom ties but I really don't think it's going to happen.

WhyOhWine · 11/10/2018 10:27

I think her book "How to be a Woman" has been criticised by the trans comnunity, but dont think she has ever said anything.

ImDivingIn · 11/10/2018 10:31

I imagine that if she said anything contentious she would get absolutely piled on.
In a perfect world it would be great if she said she had a problem with TRAs but I can understand why she would keep her head down. Or she may not have a problem with them.

You can imagine the letters to her publishers if she said anything...

CM was part of my peak transing, so she must have said something "iffy" at some point. I was at a Young Adult literature festival and some scruffy bloke in the audience rambled a monologue at the "feminism in YA" panel asking them about her views on the trans issue, and they all replied TWAW like the Borg Hmm and how disappointing older feminists were. I did go back and reread How To Be A Woman and there's nothing in there other than perhaps some wobbly thinking around class. Must have been something in a newspaper article.

ImDivingIn · 11/10/2018 10:35

She turned me on to be a feminist really in the first place, so I always have a soft spot for her. She probably has got a lot of people started on the road.

I didn't manage to get through all of 'how to be a woman' but IIRC there's quite a lot of unashamedly female biology stuff.

And whether she's really GC or not, I don't suppose the TRAs (especially the male 'lesbians') like her 'are you a feminist' test one little bit:

'So here is the quick way of working out if you're a feminist. Put your hand in your pants.

a) Do you have a vagina? and
b) Do you want to be in charge of it?

If you said 'yes' to both, then congratulations! You're a feminist.” '

AbsintheFriends · 11/10/2018 11:11

I suspect she is, but she knows that it would be career suicide to say so.

Libfem is her brand. She's made young girls her target audience and she's scared they'd turn on her in a second if she suggested their wokeness was wrong.

I have a feeling she's less active on twitter than she used to be, and fear she's keeping her head down until she sees how this is going to go.

LittlePearl · 11/10/2018 12:15

I've got very little sympathy for privileged people with a platform who want to 'keep their heads down'.

In terms of her career, actually, it could win her a HUGE audience and a good deal more support if she comes out as GC..... I can't bear her but I might rethink if she had the courage to speak out.

But her 'principals' are not very principled if she knows everything that's happening - and she surely must - and chooses to say nothing.

So much for the Sisterhood......happy to be its champion when it suits her, not when it's costly.

AbsintheFriends · 11/10/2018 12:38

I agree LittlePearl.

She prides herself on being a role model to young girls and empowering them. Along with the handsome royalties and media fees comes a shitload of responsibility.

I hope her conscience is bothering her

SweetheartNeckline · 11/10/2018 13:11

When I went to see her recently she was at pains to mention she is trans inclusive.

Haworthia · 11/10/2018 13:18

I’m with you terry Grin

FreezyBlue · 11/10/2018 13:29

I don’t think anyone who churns out the drivel she does on a weekly basis (never read any of her books for that reason) can be self-doubting or lacking in courage. Which means she probably is keeping her head down until whenever. And whenever ‘whenever’ arrives, she’ll write a pile of rubbish about how yeah, she always knew this was a problem.
Good luck with your career then, Caitlin.

LassWiADelicateAir · 11/10/2018 13:31

I have always found her irritating in the extreme. Just the title How to be a Woman is equal parts twee, grating and patronising.

Haworthia · 11/10/2018 13:42

HTBAW pissed me off. I was hoping for some real (but accessible) feminism. This was before MN radicalised me, but looking back, I now realise I was looking for radical feminism Grin Instead I found myself thinking “this is just a fucking autobiography”. She tried to weave some feminism in, but it was so feeble.

GoldenBuns · 11/10/2018 13:48

I think she may be involved in The Pool (Lauren Laverne, also), which is nauseatingly woke. I don't think she's going to reveal herself as GC any time soon.

GoldenBuns · 11/10/2018 13:52

I have been wondering about India Knight recently - I think she may have shared the Stonewall petition on Twitter. Also some very scathing comments about womxn.

Haworthia · 11/10/2018 14:04

The Pool can GTF. I was disillusioned enough with their wokeness, but then they posted this on their Instagram feed and I unfollowed. Because nothing says “feminism” like perpetuating lazy stereotypes about “typical blondes” Hmm

Is Caitlin Moran GC?
GoldenBuns · 11/10/2018 14:10

Yup - I unfollowed a couple of weeks back. They have had several articles on trans issues - the comments are always heavily censored. Quite disturbing to see the ones that remained.

Treasure114 · 11/10/2018 17:19

That Instagram post is vile. And not very feminist!

Bue · 11/10/2018 19:38

She is going to be covering trans issues in her next book. I imagine it is going to be dedicated to the problems with "white feminism" Hmm and an exercise in self-flagellation

Jeanhatchet · 11/10/2018 21:22

So many lolz just reading the title - she blocked me for my views on this in 2014.
