‘The pool’ edits sophie walkers article from women to ‘women and non binary people’

Hi, did anyone else notice this? The pool decided to edit Sophie walkers piece without her agreement to pretend she means something she didn’t. It’s on Twitter- dunno how to link thread sorry.

I'd like to raise an issue with this piece. In its conclusion I wrote: "Women must stand for women." This was changed by editors, without consultation with me, to "women and non-binary people must stand for women" on the grounds of inclusion. (more)

I think it’s outrageous. It’s massive editorial overstepping- to a leader of a political party no less- and it’s imposing and distorting an opinion that wasn’t being expressed. How can they get away with it? Gah.

I still meet people who say 'if all this is happening why dont we see it in the papers or on the news'? I think that by the time they realise why, its will be too late for them to do anything about it.
So in a way I'm pleased that the Pool have shown their hand, because this has woken some people up.

I used to like The pool’

What shits, honestly. It must break editorial codes, mustn’t it? Or should we expect every time we write women some jumped up arse will add ‘and non binary’?

This combined with two fellas discussing the word woman on newsnight has made me very cross.

Unfortunately this kind of thing can happen when sub-editors are young and full of righteousness. I wonder if the editor in charge approved the change, or if it just went out under the assumption that the subs were just tidying up the copy?

What does "The Pool" refer to? Are they newspaper editors or something else? Are they mostly men,

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 11/10/2018 10:24

I'm quite confused by why non-binary people always get lumped in with women. Why don't they get shoved in with men too, since they are, presumably, a bit of both.

Elephantinacravat · 11/10/2018 10:26

Non-binary people are still either women or men. It's a load of absolute shit.

The Pool is an online magazine - it’s for and by women (and er non binary people? ). It’s quite big/popular.

Coincidentally just started a brand new thread about another The Pool article by Gaby Hinsliff in June:

I’ve just done an unsubscribe rant!

In your non-binary face, the pool!
