Grim for feminists: an assault victim speaking out, faces even more danger & venom in Trump's US

The grim cost of speaking out against powerful rightwing men is even worse in Trump's US;
made worse because POTUS openly sides with men just like him:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/oct/10/christine-blasey-ford-faces-unsettling-future

After the Senate narrowly approved Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the US supreme court at the weekend, the judge joined Donald Trump in the White House for a triumphalist swearing in ceremony,

< for the woman who dared to speak out ... >
Meanwhile, Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who gave up her anonymity to publicly accuse Kavanaugh of attempting to rape her when the pair were teenagers, and whose powerful testimony to the Senate threatened to derail his nomination, remains in an undisclosed California location.

Death threats continue to make it impossible for Ford and her family to return to their home, one of Ford’s lawyers said.
...
“It’s going to be quite some time before they’re able to live at home.
The threats have been unending.
It’s deplorable … It’s been very frightening.”
...
< for the man ... >
On Monday, Trump apologised to him^ [Kavanaugh]^^ on “behalf of our nation” for the “terrible pain” of addressing sexual assault allegations during confirmation process.
His comments followed a Mississippi rally during which Trump mocked Ford.^

< no apologies to Christian Ford, on behalf of the nation, for all the death threats. Just mocking her >

It's terrible

Helmetbymidnight · 10/10/2018 07:18

It’s awful, awful.

We always knew trump was a misogynistic pig. A misogynistic pig facilitated by millions.

wonder if she could get political assylum somewhere...

boatyardblues · 10/10/2018 07:22

I’ve had to stop following the excellent Trump threads regularly because they were getting me down. He is deplorable and is enabling some really awful things to happen. Just when I think he surely cannot go any lower, he plumbs new depths.

lets home he gets a kicking at the midterm polls (metorphorically) and more democrats get elected.

Floisme · 10/10/2018 07:29

To be fair, I don't remember Monica Lewinksy faring much better.

I think that for once, Trump is the side show here. This is men closing ranks. Again.

If anyone would like to send a postcard or card or anything to express their support, here attached is an address care of her college. I plan to send her a card and hope that others might do too.

I hope Trump is brought down by the Mueller investigation

Yes, wealthy powerful men have always protected their own.
However, never as blatantly openly as this

Trump and the currently far right Republican Party have abandoned any semblence of morality in favour of supporting their own.
Unfortunately, their supporters have mostly joined in the vicious criticism of Ford.

I wish the Republicans would return to their less toxic form of a few decades ago, when their conservatism was fiscal - but not so deliberately punishing the poor - and was not inherently social.

An indication of how far they have swung against womens' rights:

Margaret Goldwater,
married to Barry - who was on what was then the Republican right wing -
was also a Republican, but spent much of her life working to further the women's reproductive rights movement, which sought to expand women's legal, social, and physical access to reproductive healthcare, including contraception and abortions.

True. Men closing ranks. Not the first time.
I actually watched a Youtube vid presenting 'the other side' and looking critically at Ford, because I do try not to get caught up in 'my bubble' and the female pesenter looked 'solid'. But there was nothing but smears. It amounted to: Well, Ford teaches in a college with >70% female students and >60% female professors that still has the aim to empower women, so of course she would lie to smear Kavanaugh (!?!?!), and dissecting why she would not do this and do that but do what she did regarding this investigation.
Fact is, her words and her actions came across as plausible and authentic throughout. But of course Of course, she does not have a video proving the assault. But even that would not be enough of proof for the men, as a past Canadian case, Rehtaeh Parsons shows. (It was clear a young woman who could not consent was assaulted and it was clear who did it, and where, but her face was not visible on the video made, so there was no proof she was assaulted, no matter that she said she was assaulted at that party and nobody else said they were Angry.) Rehtaeh Parsons committed suicide over the subsequent hounding. A small wonder Monika Lewinsky made it through.
Always the same pattern, really.

lornar123 · 10/10/2018 08:24

I think they might go after her for perjury, apparently they have a statement taken under oath by her ex which says she coached her friend in a polygraph test, hence the strange question asked about that in the hearing. He also claims she flew many times in a small aircraft and that she lift in a small house, all directly contradicting what she said under oath. I'm scared that this will done and it will be used to "put and end" to what are seen as malicious allegations.

deepwatersolo · 10/10/2018 08:27

I hope Trump is brought down by the Mueller investigation.

You know that this will result in Mike Pence becoming president, right? Not sure I wish for that. Except if it is very close to the presidential elections, in which case Pence doesn't have time left to realize his visions.

boatyardblues · 10/10/2018 08:37

I thought Pence was compromised too, but I agree his vision is so close to Gilead he’s no better for women.

Melanippe · 10/10/2018 09:52

Pence is implicated, but unlike his boss, he lawyered up as soon as he saw which way the wind was blowing and for the most part, shut up. Pence is terrifying.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2018 10:40

Trump openly encourages those who assault women
He openly uses racist terms

That is a big step further than Pence, who espouses similar policies, but does not legitimise predators across the country in the same way.

What one can say about Pence, is that he is unlikely to do anything impeachable, whereas it is (slightly) possible that Trump could be either impeached or forced to resign - possibly indeed on MH grounds.

Pence would be more likley to stay in office and for a 2nd term
