The Pool - ffs

I'm not sure why I'm terribly surprised, but after a piece yesterday detailing their support for more accurate and responsible use of language in the reporting of men who murder their partners, today's email update is headed with a quote from self acknowledged domestic abuser, John Lennnon. Ffs. I'd been tolerating their nonsense for the odd interesting piece like yesterday's, but that's me unsubscribed.

You might be amused by this current thread about Sophie Walker protesting about the way The Pool edited the close of her article in a way that completely undermined her meaning:

John Lennon was an abuser?!

redexpat · 09/10/2018 10:22

Just googled. Crikey.

Elephantinacravat · 09/10/2018 10:33

I'm starting to think they aren't the brightest bunch over at The Pool.

Noqont · 09/10/2018 10:40

Crikey I had no idea he was an abuser.

arranfan · 09/10/2018 10:41

By and large, as with recent revelations by McCartney about the sex sessions they had, some of The Beatles, as individuals, are problematic in many ways.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 09/10/2018 10:42

I know, redexpat, I googled myself before posting to be sure I remembered right and the first hit was a youtube video of him saying how violent he was to everyone, "his women" and men. Charmer.

Thanks arranfan, I hadn't seen the other thread.

I've emailed them, apparently they will read my mail within two days.

I had no idea about Lennon either. But then I’m discovering all kinds of things... who knew Don Johnson was living with and sleeping with, Melanie Griffith when she was 14? I didn’t until recently.

newdocket · 09/10/2018 11:45

I really dislike the Pool. Virtue signalling left right and centre but no backbone...

NorthernRunner · 09/10/2018 11:49

I am always astonished how idolised John Lennon is when he was such a horrid man. Anyway that a side... the pool sometimes it’s good, sometimes it massively misses the mark. I’m with you OP, unsubscribed!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 09/10/2018 11:55

Really, pennydrew? That's grim.

Yeah, totally true. And very grim indeed. Bowie slept with an underage girl too...

53rdWay · 09/10/2018 12:03

yes, the Bowie adulation really bothers me, he seems to have been given some special place on the “celebrities we like so much that we’ve all agreed to politely ignore their history of sex with 14-year-olds” shelf. Next to John Peel probably.

arranfan · 09/10/2018 12:05

Was it Bill Wyman of Rolling Stones with 13 yr old Mandy Smith?

One of the powerful scenes in Unforgotten Series 2 was when Tessa, the police officer wife of a child rapist, who had known but tried to maintain she hadn't, broke down and said of the 80s: [it was an era when] a rock star could go on telly and be interviewed about his underage girlfriend without getting arrested. We all bought into that – until we didn’t.

pennydrew · 09/10/2018 12:26

I will never get over how so many women can defend Polanski and Woody Allen. It’s so crazy how many actresses have done so, ones I admired... Kim Cattrall, Tilda Swinton... at least Emma Thompson came out and apologised for signing that letter re Polanski and said she was pressured by a director she respected to do it. But it is appalling that basically they’re all doing it so they can get roles 😐

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 18/10/2018 00:12

It's been a busy week so I just double checked and unsurprisingly, no reply from any of my methods of communication with the pool.
