You can't criticise fgm either. Apparently it was caused by white colonialism, so criticising it is ahistorical/hypocritical or some such nonsense.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2018 03:23

What was the article?

Mamaryllis · 09/10/2018 03:51

I would like to see it too. I have a 2 spirit friend who turned down a trans award, and I’m very interested in the lines around appropriation.

nocoolnamesleft · 09/10/2018 05:09

wtaf? The First Nations people have been subject to genocide, and the TRAs think they're more hard done to than a people that have been subject to actual and cultural near obliteration?! That's fucking appalling.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 09/10/2018 05:25

Bloody hell.

PerryPerryThePlatypus · 09/10/2018 07:59

TRAs are the most oppressed people ever in the history of civilisation doncha know.

They won't even let us have the shitty end of the stick now.

People do this with Fa’afafine as well- from Samoan culture. I’m Polynesian myself. Polynesia is traditionally very homophobic. It was actually gay or feminine boys who were often forcibly transed to become Fa’afafine because the family would rather make them a girl than have a gay son or feminine son even. I’ve read stories from older men who were transed and how devastating it was for them, how hard it was to trans back- thank god they didn’t force them to have hormones and surgery. They also did this if they had no girl children, as boys couldn’t do house chores. So to appropriate the word and apply modern thinking to it, is very wrong and it’s ignoring the harm done to boys/men, and the blatant homophobia. Someone tried to tell me that Māori culture had always had a third gender too, not true. I can’t recall the word used these days, but it’s not a traditional word and has only been used in the 2000’s. Seriously, people will do anything, including appropriating colonised and oppressed cultures, in order to push their agenda. I’m fucking sick of it.

I don't doubt that white colonialism has caused all manner of rubbish. I don't know about fgm specifically, but if it were the case I don't understand how that would mean one couldn't criticise it?
