www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/oct/08/women-men-curfew-danger-fear

An article about the relative vulnerability of women out in the world and the lack of understanding men have.

Leading with a quote from DANIELLE FUCKING MUSCATO about that female experience.

Danielle - bearded, taking a place in a women's refuge,"Suck my dick" - Muscato.

We are being trolled and mocked on a daily basis.

Primarily because the fragrant Muscato started that Twitter thread.

However, many similar threads/blogs have been created by actual females/feminists over the years, and largely ignored by mainstream media.

I guess you have to be born male in order for anyone to listen to you?
That is my take-out from this.

AssassinatedBeauty · 08/10/2018 23:38

Well, quite. It's only of interest if discussed by a stunning and brave type of women. The rubbishy boring feminist types, not so much. I am not surprised by the Guardian pulling this kind of stunt.

AngryAttackKittens · 08/10/2018 23:39

What danger is Muscato in, other than someone making fun of them?

Needmoresleep · 08/10/2018 23:40

I read this as the Grau iAd defining women as the scared creatures we ought to be.

Patronising...

hipsterfun · 09/10/2018 01:24

A friend of mine sent me Big Dan’s Twitter post last week (she’d never heard of DM) so I sent her a Magdalen Berns video in return Grin

bluescreen · 09/10/2018 02:46

Muscato for once makes a valid point, and the comments on the tweet are a peach. Please let's not fall into the trap of ad hominem/feminam criticism that blinds us. And yes, Muscato is no friend of mine and never will be, and I don't begin to have words for Muscato. But Muscato is on point here.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2018 03:22

Sort of blue but I assume Danielle is wandering around after 9pm in this world. So I wouldn't be running with headphones then either.

NotANotMan · 09/10/2018 05:05

Danielle muscato is trying to make a career out of being a twitter activist. Danielle only has a high profile because of some tweets about Donald trump that somehow got viral and since then Danielle has focused on 'feminism' and trans issues. Danielle keeps trying to get that viral success and for some reason Danielle is occasionally successful. It's infuriating.

InionEile · 09/10/2018 05:32

Ironically, the thought inherent in Danielle Muscato's suggestion is that male-bodied, penis-owning people post some kind of danger to women.

But.... but... I thought that women have nothing to fear from male-bodied people encroaching on their safe spaces? Would Muscato's theoretical post-9pm male curfew only apply to 'cis' men or would it apply to all penis-owners? I can bet the women who responded would only feel safe if the latter were the case...

Dommina · 09/10/2018 06:19

Dislike Danielle all you like but she is making a valid point, and the reaction from some men down below is interesting. Of course an actual 9pm curfew is not happening. But instead of listening to women's voices they get offended by an obvious hypothetical.
Its an interesting question.

CircleofWillis · 09/10/2018 06:21

Reading the article I am 80% convinced that the columnist knows nothing about Danielle M. The alternative is just mind boggling. Danielle might have a fear of walking alone at night but it can be nothing like the fear a woman or a feminine trans woman would experience.

CircleofWillis · 09/10/2018 06:25

Dommina, I don’t dislike Dannielle in the least. I feel that her argument should have come from a place of greater integrity. She can certainly empathise with the situation, but to co-opt other people’s lived experience as her own is dishonest.

But she didn't co opt it. She asked a question. She did state that she has been harassed and assaulted further down the thread, but that wasn't her original point, nor is it the point of the article. The article takes about the responses of women. I really, genuinely fail to see what she's done wrong here aside from being a transwoman.

So, Muscato asks the ladies, what we would do, if men had a 9 hour curfew.
The obvious answer: nothing. Cause the men, in all their bearded glory, will declare themselves women and that‘s that.

Muscato sure means well here, but talk about cognitive dissonance.

LittleLebowski · 09/10/2018 06:46

What right does bloody Muscato of all people have to talk about this?
This is about Muscato developing a mini fame + Patreon support hence all the other comments "look at my tweet being talked about in the media" and Hello to all my new followers. First, thank you for following. I appreciate you. Second, I'm a full-time civil rights activist, writer, & public speaker. I'd love to come speak for your group—DMs are open! You can also help support my activism work here:
Some replies to the tweet I'm sure are good and probably written by people who have no idea who Muscato is, but sorry, Muscato can fuck off from appropriating women's experiences.

irishfeminist · 09/10/2018 06:49

Given the vile misogyny of "Big Dan" in the past, it's not just inappropriate, it's provocatively offensive. I've emailed the Guardian.

Fucked if I'm going to use female pronouns there; the fact that women are compelled to on a site like Mumsnet is just terrifying.

Dommina · 09/10/2018 06:51

So, Muscato asks the ladies, what we would do, if men had a 9 hour curfew.

Actually she asked 'ladies, what would you do. Be upset if you like but let's stick to the truth.

kesstrel · 09/10/2018 06:53

If the Guardian were covering women's issues properly, including all the issues around self ID, and giving equal space to women's voices, then I'd have no problems with this article. But they aren't. It's that biased approach, with its continual elevation of trans voices, and denial of space to GC women's voices, that is the problem here I think.

The sad thing is thing is that, as always, I suspect men are more likely to listen to women's voices here if attention is drawn to them by someone with a beard.

Gaslighting

deepwatersolo · 09/10/2018 06:57

Domminna, how is it grammatically incorrect or misrepresenting to say Muscato asked us / the ladies, what we would do?

‚You‘ would be grammatically incorrect.

Dommina · 09/10/2018 07:01

Domminna, how is it grammatically incorrect or misrepresenting to say Muscato asked us / the ladies, what we would do?

It doesn't make too much difference, and I can see where people are coming from, though I disagree. I just think the distinction was important here because 'we' sounds as though she was including herself, whereas 'you' says she is directing it outward. I just thought it was a misquote.

.. As I'm typing I can see the other person may have been saying 'she was asking us what we would do' so I may have jumped the gun. Hands up. But I don't like seeing people misquoted.
