Current feminism issues

I'm getting less new but still new to feminism and this board so am not aware of all the current issues in feminism. I'm sick of hearing that this board focuses too much on GRA/trans issues (so please don't make this thread about those things) so I'd love to hear about other topics that are important. I'm not phrasing this well as currently ill and rather sleepy so please forgive my lack of eloquence BlushOther posters have said they want to talk about other issues but none seem forthcoming so I remain in the dark. Please can anyone help shed some light and recommend any good feminism books too as I may as well educate myself as I lie here Smile

I dont know any books but if you’re interested, there is the issue of the universal credit system and what it is doing to women, plus about a squillion other things that women have mentioned on this section.

Here is a brilliant documentary featuring Mumsnet favorites Linda Bellos and Julie Burchill. When feminists got angry.

Abortion is still on the books as a crime in the state where I live.

Pornography.

Need for Nordic model

Family Law Court being used by abusers to retraumatise their female victims.

Commercial surrogacy, the exploitation of women and girls in developing countries.

Domestic violence against children and women.

Women being left in poverty in retirement due to taking time out of work to raise the next generation of humans.

Pregnancy and maternity discrimination.

Care workers (nursery, childcare, elderly) being a pink collar industry and low pay.

You could have a look at the agenda for FiLiA next week - filia.org.uk/agenda2018/ There are obviously ID politics sessions, of course, but lots of other topics. Violence against women is the common thread, though. Many of the speakers have books out so it's a good jumping-off point.

Compulsory head and body covering for women

Media representations of women

Medical trials needing to recruit and collect date on women

Childbirth injuries

Supporting breastfeeding in a woman-friendly way

Freezingbum · 08/10/2018 22:18

Period poverty
Maternity pay paid at a higher rate than paternity (our parental leave)
Forced married
Domestic violence
Today in the news a third of girls/young women said they had been sexually harassed in their school uniform and accepted this “as part of growing up”
Gender pay gap

Just a few off the top of my head..

Current hot topics include;

  • the sex trade
  • austerity measures which have disproportionately affected women, with record numbers of children being taken into care.
  • defunding women's domestic violence shelters and rape crisis, sexual health clinics, and closure of the London FGM clinic
  • Harassment of lesbians

Sorry if that's all a bit doom and gloom, but our rights are being systematically dismantled.

Poverty for sure.

PerverseConverse · 09/10/2018 11:08

Thanks for all the comments Smile I'm ashamed to say some of those didn't appear on my radar as feminist issues (I did say I was new Blush). I've experienced lots of them too as I'm sure have far too many other women.
