Can someone explain this to me

Safe twitter link. It's made my head spin. It's when the GRA was discussed in 2003 I think. I haven't the head to look at this with logic and careful reasoning but Huntley is mentioned (he murdered in 2002).

Can someone tell me wtf is going on here?

A bunch of MPs predicted what would happen and were fobbed off. Now, it's all happening just like they warned.

CisMyArse · 08/10/2018 19:41

Why is Huntley mentioned in 2003 with regards to the GRA discussions? 2003??

I believe there were some issues round Huntley's arrest because he'd bypassed checks to be able to work in the school by changing his name (possibly more than once?)

That case would have been the big news story at the time.

Looks like Tebbit was saying what's to stop the GRA being used as a vehicle for abusers to more easily hide their previous identities, and as previously said, was fobbed off.

This is all edging closer to someone not being responsible for crimes committed pre transition. There was a test case mentioned on another thread but I can't find it or remember (perimenobrain).
Seems to contradict the idea that they were always the desired sex, just 'assigned' wrongly.

THANK GOODNESS this is getting out there more widely on Twitter. I've not been well enough to do anything so detailed or tweet etc and its so frustrating and scary to just have to hope that someone else can when everyone else is up to their eyes already.

The GRA was terrible law (as we know) and we need to let everyone know that it has had all of the negative consequences that were feared and predicted. I hope it will give some politicians the confidence to speak up.

Baroness O'Cathain said "We must not allow our natural sympathy for those who struggle with a serious psychological problem to blind us to the problems that the Bill will create for other people. If the Government persist in pushing through the Bill, they must make radical amendments to protect the freedom of conscience of those who simply do not believe that the law can declare a man to be a woman or a woman to be a man. It is only common sense and a basic human right for individuals to be free to believe fact rather than fiction, otherwise we are entering a dark future of coerced totalitarian-style law making."

As mentioned he changed his name and slipped through vetting news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3313303.stm

It is extraordinary how prescient that mention of Huntley was.

It's almost as if women are right that predators will seek to exploit loopholes in the law to get at women and children

Amazing quote

If I was a campaigner on this I would be looking up whoever was involved in those debates on Hansard and writing to them about the GRA consultation and government plans... Smile

Also noting that according to the quoted Parliamentary debate extract on OP’s twitter link, the CRB will always know about your original name if you change it?- but- didn’t we have a thread about this recently where it emerged that these days CRB will only know if you self-declare your dead-name or something..?
I’m really hoping I got that bit wrong..

SlowlyShrinking · 08/10/2018 23:09

Whose idea was this law in the first place?

CisMyArse · 08/10/2018 23:31

Chatty I'm also hoping you got that bit wrong. Not holding my breathe though since dead-naming is such a violent thing to do nowadays...

Mind. Boggles.
