Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So this happened today in DC’s school

DS told me this when he came in from school (no real names used):

12 year old DS was lining up outside maths class and the teacher told the class to go in. One of the boys (Josh) walked into the class in an ‘affected’ manner. Teacher asked Josh why he’s walking like that and Josh replies that he’s changed gender and his name’s not Josh, it’s Sarah. Teacher says, “Go and sit down and stop being ridiculous”. Josh replies, “actually you have to call me Sarah because it’s the law” (paraphrasing from DS). For the rest of the lesson, the teacher referred to Josh as Sarah (with an eye-roll according to DS). When the bell went at the end of the lesson, Josh informed the teacher that he was no longer a girl and he had changed his name back to Josh.

DS knows my feelings on self-id, which I think is why he told me, but it just sums up the whole ludicrousness of the situation. I think this boy was just having a laugh, but potentially this kind of shit could really happen, with kids just deciding they’re going to identify as the opposite sex for a couple of hours. My concern is that staff will be too worried to challenge them.

You can bet your last penny that there are pupils who will use this to try and wind their teachers up. You can also guarantee that there are also many many pupils who won't buy into this.

We have 2 FtM at the moment, one is autistic and I don't know how the hell the school will deal with this if and when they (and the parents) push for more inclusion.

Summer, no, not being sarcastic. It seemed to be over-egging it a bit to suggest that a clearly power-tripping teen messing about for the duration of one maths lesson in order to push buttons would end up on puberty blockers. He's more likely to end up in detention for taking the piss.
That doesn't make it any less serious when vulnerable children ARE prescribed life-changing medications, just that it really won't happen in this case. Josh isn't likely to be kidnapped by a gang of TRAs and force-fed oestrogen.
Suggesting it would happen in this case is the most bizarre scare-mongering. And I'm usually a fan of exploring the worst case scenarios.
And scare-mongering is the best way to start thread deletion campaigns.

We have several FTM girls in town, cis. Schools are going to have to figure out the policies as to how they differentiate between the vulnerable that they are forced to affirm and the piss-takers. (The girls I know are without doubt vulnerable. Hopefully they will realize that transition isn't a solution to their issues and will grow up to lead healthy lives embracing reality. Puberty is a truly shit time for a lot of girls.)

Another one here glad not to be in teaching anymore. It would not surprise me in the least if teachers decided they would rather find other jobs.

I think teens do this deliberately to take the piss, and I wouid like to see more teachers take the line of my DD's school.

They were told to work in B/G pairs in a particular lesson, but some girls wanted to stay together, and one piped up 'I'm identifying as a boy so we are a B/G pair'. Teacher's response - as soon as you or your parents change your school registration details, you can be classed as a boy. Until then, you're a girl and go and sit with Michael'

And yes, it was pure devilment mischief-making.

Oh DD2 has this with a demi women identifying girl in her year. The new name is only being insisted on in the classes of new teachers.

Curious that. She identifies as male with new staff, but not with old teachers who know what a trouble making attention seeking little madam she is.
