Anybody think we could do with some accurate polling?

If so, a YouGov survey asking unambiguous questions about male bodies and female spaces would be very helpful, right?

I couldn't possibly link to a crowdfund for that exact purpose on here but @helenstaniland on Twitter might have some helpful information. Two questions would be good but, as I type, I'm thinking that three questions would be better.

Woohoo! Is it about £350 a question? I reckon it could get to 10.

arranfan · 07/10/2018 11:38

That might be one of the best uses of Crowdfunder I've seen.

StayingInIn · 07/10/2018 11:41

Great idea - have donated.

LangCleg · 07/10/2018 12:10

Gosh, £2,450.

Donated - thanks for highlighting

StealthNinjaMum · 07/10/2018 12:12

Placemarking. Can't donate at the moment but will do later.

arranfan · 07/10/2018 12:20

It only needs another £70 to reach the stretch - do we think they've going to go full on ambitious?

arranfan · 07/10/2018 12:26

And the stretch target is in the rear-view mirror. :)

"are you in favour of abolishing the last remaining circumstances whereby sex can be recognised in law?"
"What sort of criminal punishment do you feel is appropriate for all female groups who meet without the presence of males?"
"Should it be illegal for biological females to declare they exist as a separate group from biological males?"
"Are you in favour of all male governments as long as half identify as women?"

I'd pay towards a crowdfunded poll, yes.

Helen S says she in touch with academics about the questions. I've seen that Prof Rosa Freedman is in support:

This is an excellent idea, and hopefully will take place before the GRA consultations closes

Very good idea. I’ve donated.

LangCleg · 07/10/2018 13:40

Helen's raised enough for six questions and doesn't need any more cash.

Well done everyone!

That was quick! Really interested to see how it goes. I would be happy to donate more for a follow up.

inquiquotiokixul · 07/10/2018 13:53

I think it's really important actually that the questions are phrased in as unbiased a way as possible - it should be worded in such a way that it would be possible for the poll to demonstrate that actually the majority of the population are fully aware that most transwomen's bodies are indistinguishable, scientifically speaking, from men's bodies and are nevertheless absolutely fine with women's spaces being fully inclusive of transwomen. Maybe the survey will prove that it's actually only a tiny minority, say less than 2%, who think biology matters. If the questions are "leading" or phrased in a way that assumes anyone with their head on straight will answer in a particular way, then the results of the whole survey will get dismissed. I hope Helen can use some of the funds to get some neutral academic advice to assist her in phrasing the questions in an unbiased way.

catkind · 07/10/2018 13:54

Great idea. The questions will need careful wording, interested to see what they pick.

On her Twitter she says that she is doing this.

inquiquotiokixul · 07/10/2018 16:09

Cool. "Terfs commission research proving that there are lots of terfs" wouldn't be a helpful headline.

Rigorous research following scientific standards showing how many people combine a generally supportive and non-transphobic live-and-let-live attitude with an insistence that the law mustn't negate facts and science or require a belief in a fantasy will be useful for both sides. I would be genuinely interested to know if a belief in science is a minority view. I'm happy to accept that I am in the minority if this is the case. I wouldn't dispute the rights of the majority to structure society along the lines of this new genderism faith if that's what everyone honestly believes. Maybe the 2 or 3 hundred of us who are not of the faith could go and found a colony on an uninhabited island somewhere? Or we could find that we are the majority.

tenorladybeaker · 23/10/2018 09:55

Is there anyone on mumsnet that is connected to this poll? @LangCleg maybe?

I thought results would be quite swift once the crowdfunder reached its target?
