Topshop take down feminism pop-up

A pop-up stand selling products that support UN charity " Girl Up " was taken down 20 minutes after being put there supposedly due to feminism being " too controversial ". Topshop are happy to sell t-shirts with " feminist " written on but this is too much for them?

Well, there we have it - feminism is "too controversial".

Fuck. This.

Redkeyboard · 05/10/2018 15:56

WTAF Whyyyyyyyy?

RepealtheGRA · 05/10/2018 15:57

Fucking Hell Shock

Respect to penguin books though.

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2018 16:04

Topshop are trying to sell fashion. Having a stall which uses liberal identity as a political fashion statement to reject the fashion clothing Top Shop are trying to sell rather looks like an own goal by whoever agreed to the book thing in the first place!

It's like having a stand saying 'don't buy clothes here, it'll do your street cred harm' in your shop window!!!!

I don't think it controversial. I think it hilarious that Top Shop didn't check what it was and just thought 'oooo we can flog some extra stuff by looking all feminist'!!!

UpstartCrow · 05/10/2018 16:05

Is that @PenguinUKBooks on Twitter? I'll put them on my list of accounts to follow.

silentcrow · 05/10/2018 16:08

Veeeeery interesting. Glad to see a ruckus starting in the literary world at last. Has anyone had a look at the book itself? I'm presuming it's quite libfem from the marketing, but prepared to be open minded.

According to the hashtag the orders came from Phillip Green himself, pretty sure he's no friend to women. I would like to know if it was his decision alone or whether he was listening to...other sources.

The hashtag is #pinknotgreen and the creator of the book ( Scarlett Curtis ) has said she can't say anymore about it.

The book sounds interesting, the description says " FEMINISTS DON’T WEAR PINK (and other lies)
'Brilliant, hysterical, truthful and real' - Reese Witherspoon
An urgent and empowering collection of new writing from a variety of women – from teenage activists to Hollywood actresses. Royalties will benefit Girl Up, the UN women's foundation. "

@JenFromTheGlen I ordered a book after seeing this too!

It’s not even that feminism is too controversial.

Doing anything for the benefit of women is too controversial. Because “what about men?”

Although in the case of Topshop, the uber woke youngsters are probably wanging on about “non-binary folks”. It’s always “folks” isn’t it? I’ve never seen the words “non-binary” without also seeing “folks”.

But I digress. I’m angry and I’m tired.

RepealtheGRA · 05/10/2018 16:20

Is the book proper feminism or is it some TWAW wankers? Is girl up worth supporting?

Louislovesmud · 05/10/2018 16:26

Is there a reason given as to why it was taken down? I checked the Twitter thread but Topshop haven't commented.

Just wondering if it was because of pressure/backlash or just a mad idea that this was controversial and not a sensible partnership

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2018 16:27

www.pinkprotest.org/about/

The about section repeatedly uses the word people (not women) and when it does use a female pronoun it's to declare that girls wank too.

The campaign is about trying to get young women and girls into activism, which is ermmm pink. Again no use of the word woman.

Check your vernacular
The language we use can enforce gender stereotypes without us realising it. Cut out phrases like ‘man up’ and ‘like a girl’ and challenge gender-biased language.

Fuck off.

This is crock shite.

Thanks for the link @MrsBertBibby

RedToothBrush

So I’ll save my money Grin

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2018 16:30

It's not feminism. It's 'being nice' socialisation and promoting a lifestyle not feminism. It's this liberal identity bullshit.

It's reinforcing gender stereotypes whilst protesting and professing desperately that actually your not.

God its dire.

icannotthinkofauser · 05/10/2018 16:32

@RepealtheGRA they're a charity that support programs promoting the health, safety, education and leadership of girls in developing countries.

They have clubs across schools and colleges giving young girls a chance to learn about feminism and develop leadership skills.

They sound like a great charity from the research I've done and can't find anything showing their views on GRA or anything.

My eyes! What's with all the s and m stuff? I suppose it's 'empowering'.

icannotthinkofauser · 05/10/2018 16:33

@RepealtheGRA oops cross posted hadn't seen the links above

OP posts:
RepealtheGRA · 05/10/2018 16:34

Thanks, so it’s worth supporting the charity, but not by buying the shitty book?

speakingwoman · 05/10/2018 16:38

I'd be pretty aggrieved by Topshop's stance even if isn't a book whose every sentence I agree with.......

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2018 16:39

Yeah the image with all the paraphilia labelled 'girl things'.

What age is this book and this activism pitched at???

Oh yeah. From teenagers.

RepealtheGRA · 05/10/2018 16:40

speakingwoman

Oh I am, but I’ve been boycotting them for nearly a year prior to this anyway. Their behaviour is appalling but I wouldn’t expect anything less from them.
