Naming someone's sex is hate speech, apparently

Just received attached from Twitter.

This was in reply to someone who said that 'woman' doesn't mean anything.

Apparently identifying that a person who said that 'woman' doesn't mean anything (which is perfectly ok, and not hate speech, apparently) as a man is hate speech.

Oooh. Twitter have missed off the protected characteristic of sex and replaced it with gender. I wonder how you go about telling them their rules are unlawful?

OvaHere · 01/10/2018 20:01

They maybe aren't unlawful though. Twitter is based in California and I don't know what kind of equality legislation they have there.

It's actually a bit of a quandary for SM in general because should the law regarding content be based on the country of the tweeter and not where the platform resides? This could be an issue for all kinds of things.

Even the US list includes sex not gender. Interesting, "gender reassignment" doesn't seem to make the cut over there.

"Federal protected classes include:
Race.
Color.
Religion or creed.
National origin or ancestry.
Sex.
Age.
Physical or mental disability.
Veteran status.
Genetic information.
Citizenship."

In the US there is no 'hate speech' per se, it's just Twitter's arbitrary set of rules.

Interesting Yam. So they are ignoring sex. What a surprise.

AbsintheFriends · 01/10/2018 21:03

And in what way was that promoting violence, threatening or harassing? It was a factual observation.

TurfClub · 01/10/2018 21:25

I'm struggling to understand the logic: the poster arrived to say that 'woman is meaningless'. Then I said they were a man. Then they blocked me. Then I was banned from Twitter.

So I am not sure if it is the case that 'woman is meaningless' but calling someone a man is offensive.

There do seem sometimes to be similar currents on here though so it wouldn't surprise me.

There is no logic on twitter that's the problem. Doubly so if you are a woman (the vagina kind).

TurfClub · 01/10/2018 21:29

I wonder if anyone has ever been banned for calling someone a woman. I believe there have been multiple bans for calling people men. It's strange that that would be hate speech. I'm sure there's a long Marxist analysis somewhere there.

Woman is meaningless, man means something.

I need an eye-roll smiley....

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/10/2018 09:30

Calling people a man does seem to be a serious hate crime on Twitter. twitter.com/FionneOrlander/status/1046828527964835840
