Newbie Question re Gender Fluid

Hi another lurker here with a newbie question. Growing up I actually though Boy George Annie Lennox Phil Oakey were the future and that gender fluidity would be the norm. 2018 and its like we've gone backwards with programmes like Love Island where the women dress like Barbie and the men have big muscles and short hair. Does the rise in BD go hand in hand with the rise in pinkification? Do we also need to campaign against magazines and TV that make kids think they have to choose a side. Are gender benders and metrosexuals still a thing? Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm still learning. Thanks

Hi newbie

Yes I think there is a link.
Have you heard of a campaign called 'Let Toys Be Toys'? It actually started as a discussion on Mumsnet I believe lettoysbetoys.org.uk/

WOuld gender unconstrained be better terminology? Gender fluid is usually used by people who accept the concept of masculine and femininely personality traits and then observe how people may have elements of both? Whereas to me gender unconstrained means refusing to be bound by any gender sterotypes?

Yes bit of a mouthful but does makes sense, especially in terms of children and young people

I do think the rise of 'pinkification' has a lot to answer for. When I was little toys I played with all sorts of toys, played outdoors a lot, wore my brother's hand-me-downs. We even had matching page boy haircuts/polo necks at one point. The heavy marketing of gendered toys/clothes now is nothing more than a cynical money-making scheme.
