Surprised there is no thread on this already (apologies if I've missed it). The trailer looks like an advert for Mermaids.

This will utterly reinforce the 'born in the wrong body' narrative, which, together with the T being part of LGB are the two principle reasons fighting this is so difficult.

I wonder if Mumsnet will invite Anna Friel on for a web chat about her role in this new drama?

They really are manipulative sods aren’t they. I notice they made sure to pick a delicate, pretty looking little boy to play the part, so people would be able to think what an acceptable looking girl, he’d be. If they had used a chubby, plain little boy, with glasses and prepubescent skin, they wouldn’t have found it as easy to pull the heart strings. BTY, I’m not judging children on how they look, but you know they went out to find a boy that would fill the ‘girly’ role.

No doubt anyone, in the series, with genuine concerns for the child, that doesn’t play along with his fantasy, that he can change sex, will be made out to be a well meaning bigot. I’m also sure must of them will end up ‘seeing the light’ as the story rambles on.

Anna Friel is an actor. She's an intelligent woman, but I doubt very much she's particularly well-informed on gender critical issues and will likely say what she's been told to say if interviewed about this programme.

I believe Mermaids advised on it...

noraclavicle · 29/09/2018 13:01

Well funnily enough, Mermaids advised on it..there was a piece on Anna Friel plugging Butterfly in Grazia last issue or the one before.

Anna will now be way too invested to see any other perspective. She will rationalise away the negative comments as being from bigots and haters and will feel even more secure in her rightness. Many people making those comments used to hold the same perspective as Anna but none of us had transed a child or made a TV series about it so we're able to review our positions.

The only thing that can bring much of this transing of children crashing down is if Mermaids goes the way of Kids Company.

Why do all these dramas, there's an ongoing one on Woman's Hour sometimes, always feature a boy who wants to be a girl? Very rarely a girl who wants to be a boy when there are far more of these cases. I think the split is 70/30.

I was just going to say what Procrastinator said. We could have a nice story about a young lesbian who got hooked into the trans ideology, thought she was a boy, met some fab gender critical women (maybe her mum is on mumsnet?) and some older lesbians, realised she was fine as she was and they all lived happily ever after. But probably not enough drama...

I think you could have a gripping psychological thriller about a young lesbian trying to detransition in a world that doesn't support her.
