Was thinking about baby names. Wanted feminist names but those based on goddesses or mythology or ancient history rather than modern feminist figures.

So far I came up with
Lilith (of course)
Circe
Kali
Pandora
Cordelia
Boudicca
Nzingha
Tiamat
Atalanta
Mazu
Oya
Gaia
Freya
Isis
Durga

Isis blew my head off 😍

I hate to say this my lovely but a circle is a shape. I think it might be classed as child cruelty. As a feminist, I’m a little offended. This just isn’t it chief.

GetKetty · 02/02/2019 04:43

Boudicca was a Celtic warrior and Durga is a goddess. This is cultural appropriation unless your daughter is to ride into war with breast cups or is a goddess of invincibility.

Amalthea

MsFanackerPants · 17/03/2019 23:22

GetKetty, are you being serious? Circe (no l) was a Greek goddess.
I'd avoid it now as it has the same pronunciation as the GoT character Cirsei.

Aphra (Behn)

C17th English poet and playwright. Not quite ancient history, but old enough, perhaps, and a lovely name.

Gudrid (Thorbjarnardottir)

C10TH Icelandic navigator and explorer. Shame it starts like good riddance...

My daughter is Aphra after Behn. It is a very underused name - there were 7 in 2019.

Is Aphra short for Aphrodite?

Kyniska seems like a very good name for current times.

No. Aphra is of medieval origin. Maybe a female version of Alfred.

I've been watching The Chilling Stories of Sabrina the Witch with my daughter and have only just learnt about Lilith, the first wife of Adam. She certainly is a powerful female who ran away from Adam as he wanted to dominate her sexually (be on top) so she ran away, but he sent 3 angels to track her down! Sounds like domestic abuse. She is a survivalist for sure and it is a good name. But then she is supposed to be the demon that takes newborn babies!

DaisiesandButtercups · 13/04/2021 12:10

Well that last bit isn’t likely true though is it.

Women who stand firm against male domination will usually be slandered.

Of course Adam told everyone that. “She was awful, she was the one abusing me and do you know what, she steals babies now, evil and crazy.”

DARVO

And the tale stood as a lesson to all women, if you don’t do as your husband tells you’ll be slurred as crazy and evil, or you obviously are in fact crazy and evil.

There is a quote

“Feminism encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.”

Pat Robertson

Same old, same old. From the beginning of time.

FemaleAndLearning · 13/04/2021 17:58

I'm still in shock that Adam had another wife!

DaisiesandButtercups · 13/04/2021 18:06

I know right! Adam and the church kept quiet about that! Yet others get excommunicated for divorce, I reckon he must’ve got an annulment though for it not being a proper missionary position consummation.
