It's a new one on me. Is this another load of snowflake bolkocks or is this a real pronoun now?

Mx has been a thing for a while.
Its an alternative to gendered Miss or Mr and i think is used when the person doesn't want to be identified by their gender.

Ekphrasis · 23/09/2018 10:22

In a truly gender free world I can see the point of it tbh. Certainly wish I'd gone with Ms a long time ago.

jellyfrizz · 23/09/2018 10:23

It's a real title like Mr or Mrs. I'm ok with it as women's titles generally share too much unnecessary info (Mrs - married, Miss - not married, Ms - I use this, most people assume I'm divorced).

Gileswithachainsaw · 23/09/2018 10:23

Would the appearance in a school concern you they have drunk the kool aid?

It's not a pronoun it's a title. I think the x is meant to signify unknown.

I've not known anyone who uses it, though I've seen computer systems that support it.

KlutzyDraconequus · 23/09/2018 10:27

Why would its appearance at a school.matter?

I couldn't give a shit what a teacher calls them selves, Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, Mx or Grand poomba of the exalted lodge of antelopes.
I care that they do their job, beyond that, it their.pricate business.

DuckingGoodPJs · 23/09/2018 10:33

Seems unnecessary and stupid, tbh.

Gileswithachainsaw · 23/09/2018 10:34

It's nore about the answer to any questions or nonsense around accidently using the wrong one that would worry me . If they get on with teaching obviously no problem

Primary kids get teachers titles wrong ALL the time. If you're a female it's generally just "Miss" whether you're actually Dr. or Mrs. I've never known anyone to get upset about it.

Gileswithachainsaw · 23/09/2018 10:41

This is on a secondary school.

I can see the point of it as it has always rankled with me that women are supposed to announce their status in this way. I find Ms hard enough.to say although I have used for.over twenty years but how do we pronounce Mx??

Gileswithachainsaw · 23/09/2018 10:48

I have no idea. I think it's a man tho ugh as we called him Mr when reading the homework although she's only 2 weeks in so might have got mixed up...

As long as the teacher concerned has no issue with being called Sir/Miss by the kids, because that will happen. And as long as the other staff don't get upset if the kids refer to this teacher as Mr/Miss, because expecting them to remember Mx and use it on pain of punishment is not fair.

KlutzyDraconequus · 23/09/2018 11:03

how do we pronounce Mx?

Like Ms is
"Miz"
Mx is
"Miks"

RaininSummer · 23/09/2018 11:44

Ok ty, sounds quite odd and will take a few years to be used without accompanying explanation I think.

BettyDuMonde · 23/09/2018 11:45

I realise there is room for regional variance but as a Ms of 25 years standing, I refute that it is pronounced ‘miz’ (too close to ‘miss’ so easy to misunderstand). I pronounce it ‘muz’ - no misunderstandings so far!

Re: the teacher - ask them? Or the school office? That will allow for regional variations. Agree that that doesn’t mean the kids will adhere to it!

I have no issue with Mx as a title, in the past we’ve needed to get a PhD before we can have a ‘none of your business’ title regarding sex.

However, I am perfectly happy with being identified as a woman, it’s only my marital status that I would prefer not to reveal-at-first-glance,, and Ms is the thus the equivalent of Mr.

KlutzyDraconequus · 23/09/2018 11:49

I refute that it is pronounced ‘miz’

Bit are correct. In the link below there are.sound files showing pronunciation..
'Miz' and 'muz' are included.

Titles that indicate marital status etc are stupid and should be abolished asap. I don't see the need for them at all tbh and they demonstrate the extreme sexism in our society, where women are expected to tell the world if they are married but men are not. Let the kids call the teachers by their first names- they do in many other countries without coming to any harm.

Anlaf · 23/09/2018 12:30

I was once very pro-mx as I thought that removing any sign I was female would help reduce my exposure to sexism.

Obviously without attempting to address the structural sexism. And to hell with all those unhip broads who still called themselves ms, or Mrs Shock. And I am very obviously female.

Anyway, minds change, or brains engage. Happy enough for other to use it if they wish.

However , HSBC introduced a range of gender markers. Is this PC gorn mad?

We appreciate that Mx is not the only gender neutral title in use and you can now choose to change your title to any of the following:
Mx; Ind; M; Misc; Mre; Msr; Myr; Pr; Sai; Ser

That'll be Ser Anlaf Amplebosom, thank you very much
