Can someone give me some quick stats as to “men are raping women in toilets”...

As my mum is currently not believing me...!

I have just self ID’d as a male in the theatre and she thinks I’m crazy!

OP posts:
UpstartCrow · 22/09/2018 23:46

This is not a claim that is commonly made, and its not how statistics are collected; so no one can do that.

Show your Mum the govt consultation on Self ID. Explain it means the end of women only spaces such as hospital wards, and that she won't be able to ask for female staff for personal care.

ArmchairAnnie · 23/09/2018 00:01

Translation: we don't have any so please show her this and throw in a large dose of scaremongering.

FloralBunting · 23/09/2018 00:18

I don't know why, but when I think of armchairs, and random plopping snark and no substance, I keep picturing Davros on his zippy chair with all the control buttons.

JoyTheUnicorn · 23/09/2018 00:20

There was an article in the times recently about assaults in mixed sex changing rooms.

Yambabe · 23/09/2018 00:25

I'm not sure men are raping women in toilets to be fair.

Most rapes (at least 70%) are committed by someone known to the victim. (source : www.rainn.org/statistics/perpetrators-sexual-violence)

There is evidence that women are in more danger of sexual assault in unisex spaces though www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/sexual-assault-unisex-changing-rooms-sunday-times-women-risk-a8519086.html

LightofaSilveryMoon · 23/09/2018 00:28

OP, you say this:

I have just self ID’d as a male in the theatre and she thinks I’m crazy!

Could you elucidate? What is that supposed to mean?

I ask in a spirit of enquiry.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 23/09/2018 00:47

Yam I think the Times article said the crimes recorded ranged from voyeurism to rape, IIRC.

UpstartCrow · 23/09/2018 00:52

The ONS are the ones that collect the stats, Annie. they don't record the location of the assault.
And of course the stats are meaningless if you cant accurately record them by sex.

Data shows that unisex bathrooms are linked with an increased risk of voyeurism and sexual assault for women.

UpstartCrow, It's late, I applaud you in your unremitting task to provide evidence.

Brava missus.

UpstartCrow · 23/09/2018 01:04

Why thank you. I take no credit, my sleep cycle is all out of whack.
I just realised I was so slow someone else already posted it but it bears repeating.

OnlyObjectivity · 23/09/2018 02:06

Is there any reason why you are interested in "rape" specifically?

It is a bit weird to be so specific. Most women are concerned about experiencing any kind of attack, sexual assault or unwanted contact.

Mamaryllis · 23/09/2018 02:13

Well quite. Otherwise you run the risk of looking like a TRA trying to catch feminists out.
Like Annie, who was so quick off the mark she made herself look like a sock puppet. Grin

nauticant · 23/09/2018 09:38

Poster: This is not a claim that is commonly made + Here's a gov.uk link

ArmchairAnnie: scaremongering

This is just bizarre. I'm not sure it would pass a Turing test.

FermatsTheorem · 23/09/2018 11:46

The goady fuckers are a bit transparent.

It's been said many times on here that although toilets are an issue, they're not the main issue. The main issue is male bodied people in prisons, closed psychiatric wards, women's domestic violence shelters, women's homeless shelters.

Prisons in particular - where male-bodied sex offenders and rapists (e.g Karen White) are being placed with vulnerable women prisoners and assaulting them.

OP, put the fucking straw man down and engage with the actual arguments.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 24/09/2018 17:20

Like others have said. Toilets aren’t the main issue. If I ask for a woman to look at my vagina then I would like a woman (truth is I’ve had a man examine me before and I was fine, but it was my choice and I didn’t feel threatened) if I get told that a clearly male person is the woman I’ve requested I will not be happy. And as someone who has been raped, threatened with rape and raped repeatedly and sexually assaulted as a child, I wouldn’t feel comfortable having been lied to. Also, men cannot go into women’s toilets at the moment without it being obvious, but once the law changes what’s to stop the weirdos from walking in and claiming whatever they want just to make a woman feel uncomfortable? It’s not even about touching a woman or hurting her but knowing you are making her uncomfortable is enough to get some people off. It’s not acceptable. You want a space to feel safe in or to feel accepted in? Fight for another space, don’t take from those who don’t want it taken.

Juells · 24/09/2018 17:26

"I have just self ID’d as a male in the theatre and she thinks I’m crazy" 😂 You couldn't make it up! Oh wait...

AmateurSwami · 24/09/2018 17:31

“Can someone tell me about rape because I’ve just self ID’d in the theatre”. Pardon? ..... just.... pardon?

QuackPorridgeBacon · 24/09/2018 17:46

What do you even mean by “I’ve just self ID’d as male in the theatre” I can’t even think to understand this? Do you mean you are playing a male role or have I missed something?

OlennasWimple · 24/09/2018 18:07

I used the gents in a bar on Friday (two self-contained loos next to each other; mum takes two smal children into the ladies, gents is empty and I was desperate). I realise now I should have claimed this as an act of ManFriday-ness and pissed on the seat while I was in there

Datun · 24/09/2018 18:13

Tossers call to tossers everywhere.

Datun · 24/09/2018 18:15

OP, could you just quickly let me have the stats for transwomen who have been attacked in male toilets?

I mean, it must be extraordinarily high to convince them that women need to sort the risk.

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/09/2018 18:15

How many rapes would your mum consider an adequate amount to cause her concern?

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/09/2018 18:18

A friend of mine was raped by a man in a women’s toilets when she was 9yo. She needed reconstructive surgery after the attack. In a nice national trust property where you’d think a girl would be safe to go the loo. He wasn’t self IDing as a woman but had sneaked in and hidden in a cubicle. But I do believe that self IDing would give men more opportunity to enter women’s toilets.
