She's about to be on Talk Radio, talking about the government ordering an inquiry into the surge in girls wanting to be boys.

Just starting now.

Wow, who's she talking to? She's right behind Dr Nicholas, isn't she!

silentcrow · 17/09/2018 09:32

Dr Nicola. Apologies Blush

Cuntysnark · 17/09/2018 09:33

I’m getting goose bumps. Fucking awesome!

FuriousFifties · 17/09/2018 09:33

Brilliant

Enjoli · 17/09/2018 09:34

Listened. Great job!

Melamin · 17/09/2018 09:35

Just caught the end about the puberty blockers.

It is definitely something that will have repercussions 10 years, and beyond, down the line.

womensvoicesmatter · 17/09/2018 09:35

She was talking to Julia Hartley-Brewer, who's had her on a few times.

JHB is fantastic on this issue. She takes no prisoners.

Angryresister · 17/09/2018 09:41

Excellent Dr Nic, JHB totally up to speed..clearly talking about familiar material. Now we must all wrote to Penny Mordaunt.

ShotsFired · 17/09/2018 09:41

Dr Nic got some excellent succinct points across, about the social contagion, about the real effects of "affirming" and the medical outcomes, and about the future generation of transed girls asking why the holy hell we adults didn't stop them...

PersistenceIsNotFutile · 17/09/2018 09:46

Is there a replay available?

silentcrow · 17/09/2018 09:59

Ah, thank you, I missed the first minute.

JHB totally up to speed..clearly talking about familiar material. Doesn't that make SUCH a difference to how it was framed, though - no woolly "we need to be nice to everyone" stuff, very clearly putting across that a small number of loud activists are driving it, not representating the whole, and being vile about it too.

What's the listenership for this station? I generally only ever put R4 on when I need to have a good shout at politicians Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/09/2018 10:29

I just downloaded the TalkRADIO app and was able to listen via Listen Again.

Fantastic - JHB is up to speed and Nic was able to get across all her points.

The tide has turned.

VickyEadie · 17/09/2018 10:32

Excellent Dr Nic, JHB totally up to speed..clearly talking about familiar material. Now we must all wrote to Penny Mordaunt.

I was thinking about writing to her over the weekend. Do people think I should keep it solely to this issue, or (as I had originally thought) write about the whole GRA/self-id package?

R0wantrees · 17/09/2018 10:48

Now we must all wrote to Penny Mordaunt.

Also worth continuing to write to Victoria Atkins MP (Minister for Women) who raised concerns recently and faced criticism for doing so.

"Women's minister 'cautious' over the number of teenagers undergoing gender reassignment treatment"
(extract)
The women’s minister has said she is “cautious” about the number of teenagers undergoing gender reassignment treatment and warned the country needs to be “particularly alert” to the issue.

Victoria Atkins expressed concern that a rising number of teenagers were seeking “life-changing” medical interventions. Young people were undergoing treatment to change their gender because they regard it as “an answer to questions they are not asking themselves”, the minister said.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Mrs Atkins, who has responsibility for the Government’s gender equality policy, said: “I read in the paper recently that there has been a large increase in the number of teenagers who are identifying as such, and I think we need to get down to the reasons why this is happening." James Kirkup: 'Victoria Atkins deserves praise, not vilification, for speaking of her caution over transgenderism'
(extract)
Well done, Victoria Atkins. The minister for women and equality, in a Telegraph interview, has talked about the sharp rise in the number of children – and girls, in particular – being referred to the NHS over gender issues, a journey that can take them on to use of puberty-blocking drugs, hormone treatments and, later in life, surgery.

Mrs Atkins surely spoke for a great many people, not least parents, when she said she was “a little cautious” of the use of medical treatments that have potential consequences for the rest of a child’s life." (continues)

Talk Radio's write-up of the interview: a short news article open for comments

talkradio.co.uk/news/transgender-children-are-social-contagion-fuelled-internet-says-dr-nicola-williams-18091727910

R0wantrees · 17/09/2018 11:29

extract from article above:

"Dr Nicola Williams told Julia Hartley-Brewer the investigation was "long overdue" and that the number of girls undergoing sometimes irreversible procedures was "a tragedy".

"Girls, they bind their breasts and then they have their breasts removed leaving them with massive scars, they go on testosterone it makes them infertile, they have permanent facial hair and male pattern baldness. Boys, they go on oestrogen they grow their breasts but their genitals remain childlike, they have no sexual function. We are destroying these children's lives if we get this wrong.

"Adults are facilitating it and encouraging it. Schools are teaching it in class. Nobody is allowed to question why so every child gets referred by all the adults they trust around them, this is so dangerous.

"Yes, people will call us transphobic for this but you know what, I don't care. If the audience asked their friends do they know anybody who has a daughter or a granddaughter wanting to be trans, they'll soon find people. There are clusters in schools. This is clearly a social contagion fuelled by the internet.

"There's a tragedy unfolding here. In a decades' time there'll be a whole generation of girls, infertile, no breasts, and they'll all be asking why didn't the adults around them talk sense and not go along with these teenage beliefs."

A source at the Government Equalities Office told the Times: "There has been a substantial increase in the number of individuals assigned female at birth being referred to the NHS.

“There is evidence that this trend is happening in other countries as well. Little is known, however, about why this is and what are the long-term impacts.”

"The idea that if a girl likes to do boys things, that doesn't mean someone's trans and you don't put them on medication to change their body. What you do is you change society to allow girls to just be girls that like to do things that we typically regard as boys things," Dr Williams added."

Every so often these days, I find myself open-mouthed with shock that the very things I thought were long gone, dismissed as sexist, stereotypical nonsense - "girl things and boy things" - are actually causing people to mutilate their bodies AND removing hard-won rights for women.

Theswaggyotter · 17/09/2018 13:31

Fantastic interview, hopefully will reach some more people with this. I don’t see how anything either of them said could be considered transphobic

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 17/09/2018 14:02

Argh, no one is assigned female at birth like in some sort of weird sorting hat. They're observed, observed female at birth. Biological fact. If female people weren't so obviously female we'd have a lot less sex based oppression.

BesmirchingMotherhood · 17/09/2018 14:02

This is heartbreaking.

As above - that stood out to me.

The self-identified MP wife who commented recently - this is what she failed to acknowledge. To some extent, it wouldn't matter if the CRC consultation were to be kicked into the long grass because of Brexit - so many bodies are changing their language and policies in advance of any legislation.

Once they've all done this through fear or wokeness - whatever the motivation - it will become de facto - and then we will have the legislation just to catch up with and formalise what has already become "best practice".

No - that Government Equalities Office needs an assertive response from obstetricians, midwives and their various representative bodies.

R0wantrees · 17/09/2018 14:15

There has been a substantial increase in the number of individuals assigned female at birth being referred to the NHS

James Kirkup May 2018
'Why are some MPs trying to shut down the transgender debate?'

(extract)
"I do not know for sure, but it seems very likely that he was referring to the rise in the number of children presenting at the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) of the Tavistock and Portman Trust, which is the NHS centre of excellence for helping children and adolescents with gender dsyphoria and other issues of gender-variance.

In 2009/10, the GIDS had 97 children referred, of whom 40 were listed as “assigned female at birth.” In 2016/17, the GIDS had 2016 children referred, of whom 1400 were assigned female at birth. The total caseload for the service rose 2,078 per cent in seven years. The number of assigned females being referred rose 3,500 per cent in seven years. Why have the numbers risen in this way? Is there a clear and undisputed explanation, which would render Lord Tebbit’s suggested research into causation redundant?

This is an issue addressed by Dr Polly Carmichael, who runs the GIDS, in a recent talk to the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health. In her thoughtful hour-long lecture, she said this:

“The rapid rise in the number of assigned females…. exemplifies the importance of keeping discourse open and allowing different voices to be heard.

“You might say the increase in the numbers of assigned females coming forward is [because] that it’s easier for females to talk about their gender-diverse feelings so what we are seeing is an increase in awareness getting towards a better representation of the true prevalence of this among females.

“A converse explanation, a question: are there issues for young women around how they perceive their gender? There has been a worry by some that people who would previously have had an outcome around sexuality are now having an outcome around gender.”

(In other words, these are girls who do not readily identify with the predominant idea of femininity and are sexually attracted to biological females, and who would, a decade or two ago, have grown up to consider themselves lesbians.) Dr Carmichael’s conclusion:

“The truth is we don’t know, but we need discussion in order to be thinking about what this could mean.” (continues)
