This is a very interesting statement from them about something that went under the radar;

www.soroptimistinternational.org/womens-organisations-say-no-to-safeguarding-traditional-values-at-the-expense-of-human-rights/

''Last month the UN Commission on the Status of Women failed to adopt agreed conclusions at its 56th session on the basis of safeguarding "traditional values" at the expense of human rights and fundamental freedoms of women.''

''We are particularly concerned to learn that our governments failed to reach a consensus on the basis of safeguarding “traditional values” at the expense of human rights and fundamental freedoms of women. We remind governments that all Member States of the United Nations (UN) have accepted that “the human rights of women and of the girl-child are an inalienable, integral and indivisible part of universal human rights” as adopted by the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna. Governments must not condone any tradition, cultural or religious arguments which deny human rights and fundamental freedoms of any person.''

I have also thought they have a good focus.

Also you can do things for women and girls in your own community, such as becoming a governor and going on the committee of community groups where women's voices matter.

I think we get too tied up thinking that we aren't good enough to do these things or we haven't time. But they are important.

Hoppinggreen · 14/09/2018 15:25

They do allow self ID Transwomen to join in case that’s an issue for anyone, I asked them

FanWithoutAGuard · 14/09/2018 18:17

Wow upstart. That is a thing. As usual, I wanted to type that at least they didn't hold traditional values above women and girls - but then they didn't uphold women and girls above traditional values, so it's a (unconscionable) stalemate, rather than a win - just shows you how far we are to go when my first thought is 'at least it didn't get any worse'

SophoclesTheFox · 14/09/2018 18:48

I've though about joining the soroptimists before - I think it sounds great. I might go along to the next meeting of my local chapter.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 14/09/2018 21:55

I keep meaning to post about the soroptimists as I thought they sound interesting in their perspective. I might see about going to a meeting too.

How is that not going to end up "decentering biological females" as Stock expresses it?

FesteringCarbuncle · 14/09/2018 23:13

I went to a meeting
They were amazing. They do such good work with disadvantaged women and women in prisons
Then they told me that anyone who identified as a woman is welcome
That was me out. I don't identify as a woman and I can't give money to an organisation that doesn't know what a woman is
They should know the dangers to the women they work with from removing sex based protections
I am disappointed and I believe my local group know full well what a woman is

INALIENABLE RIGHTS

If you say that someone has an inalienable right to something, you are emphasizing that they have a right to it which cannot be changed or taken away. Colilns Dictionary

not able to be transferred to another; not alienable Colilns Dictionary

Not subject to being taken away from or given away by the possessor. Oxford Dictionaries

So, this means that women cannot give away their women's rights, and men cannot take or transfer them to others or themselves.

Well, we saw this in Goodwin 2002, and in the GRA so here I think we have grounds to challenge both and win.

It would be a stupid move for anyone to try to pretend that the 1993 Convention was including any male as a woman/ girl or using anything but biology.

BetsyM00 · 15/09/2018 13:04

They send representatives to the CEDAW conference in New York (?), so worth investigating further.

StunninBravepen · 15/09/2018 23:10

I think , this looks like the organization that is truly trying to focus on woman, girls and education.....

OP posts:
Hoppinggreen · 16/09/2018 08:53

And people with penises who identify as women

StunninBravepen · 16/09/2018 14:01

I am not anti trans just pro woman but that is a discussion for another thread. Now what is the best way to help woman and young girls...

OP posts:
Hoppinggreen · 16/09/2018 14:16

Fair enough
I only mention it because there was a previous thread on the subject and people were very hopeful that it might be a genuinely female only organisation
I was very interested in joining them as well as their aims and objectives seem to be great

FesteringCarbuncle · 16/09/2018 17:38

I was going to join but was told it is for anyone who identifies as a woman
That rules me out. I don't identify as a woman
