A balanced piece on transgender prisoners from Richie Garside, Director of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies:

OP posts:
Juells · 14/09/2018 09:29

mostly males, who assert a gender identity at odds with their birth sex

Nailing his colours to the mast with his very first sentence - "assert" "birth sex"

arranfan · 14/09/2018 09:31

Richard Garside is a fine commentator on justice, crime and prisons. I wish he were invited to comment on this mess by various media outlets but I suppose they want controversy, not Garside's well-considered nuance.

What is a “fecking terf”, Juells? Do you mean a woman who defends the safety, rights and dignity of women? In which case the abusive expletive is very revealing of your attitude to women, no?

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 14/09/2018 09:43

Good article.

TimeLady · 14/09/2018 09:46

Great piece. Measured and fair to both sides. Thank you, Richard.

I can see gay prisoners feeling somewhat aggrieved by the suggestion for

transgender wings or other facilities where they can live out their identity in a more comfortable environment than is likely to be the case in a conventional male prison.

but that's a discussion for the Gs to have with the Ts - nothing to do with females.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/09/2018 09:56

stand down Babdoc, Juells was firmly tongue in cheek...

Juells · 14/09/2018 10:22

I'm not upset - I frequently read the first sentence of a post and go off half-cocked, then have an OOPS realisation Grin Could happen to a bishop.

Juells · 14/09/2018 12:13

Oh well, my comment has been deleted now.

Note to self - don't make jokes about serious subjects.

cor blimey

Richard Garside has been taking some flak for that piece and is handling it with dignity:

So I've been called transphobic by several people this week, including by some who should know better. It's not nice, but it is nothing compared to what many gender critical women face day-in, day-out, year-on-year. I admire you all.

Juells, if you were honestly just being ironic, I’m really sorry. You should contact MNHQ and get your post reinstated.
It was very intemperate wording though!
I’m autistic, and although I’ve taught myself to recognise irony, I didn’t understand yours, and presumably MNHQ didn’t either.
Apologies again. The last thing I want is for fellow GC feminists to be silenced!
If it’s any consolation I’ve had posts censored and deleted on FB for saying that paedophiles pretending to be trans shouldn’t be sharing female showers and changing rooms with our young teenage daughters!
Please don’t be deterred from contributing to the discussion and the defence of women’s rights.

Excellent piece. An appropriate combination of wisdom and compassion, I think.

AspieAndProud · 15/09/2018 12:44

Transgender prisoners – those, mostly males, who assert a gender identity at odds with their birth sex – pose a challenge for prison managers. Prisons, after all, are social institutions grounded in the gender binary: that one is either male or female.

Sex, not gender. Bobody builds prisons with 'gender' in mind.

Transgender prisoners challenge such a binary.

Nope, they bring back gender with a vengeance. They just don't tie it to biological sex.

Gentlygently · 15/09/2018 12:47

What an extremely sensible, balanced piece.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/09/2018 12:52

Yes, surprising misuse of gender rather than sex there, aspie

LangCleg · 15/09/2018 13:44

He's been back on Twitter, reiterating the position.

Prisons to be sex segregated; trans prisoners to have their "gender identity" respected and given dignity, and their safety ensured within the male estate. He asserts also this is not transphobia.
