Double mastectomies for kids in the US

U.S. Doctors are performing double mastectomies on healthy 13-year-old girls says the headline. The subhead continues:

Thirty-three of these girls were under 18 at the time of surgeries a taxpayer-funded researcher is studying to validate transgenderism. Two were only 13 years old, and five were only 14.

I have to admit my first reaction was to think thank god for the NHS, the cautious Tavistock and a different approach to medicine and consumerism. But I'm alright Jack (or Jill) is never a way of looking at the world that appeals to me long, and I know ROGD is probably as big a deal in the UK as in the US.

I hardly ever cry so the tears gathering behind my eyes must be something else. I'm outraged.

What the fuck gives anyone the right to deliberately mutilate young women? And this in one of the world's supposedly the most advanced countries?

The doctors doing this shit better stash all their ill gotten gains ready to flee the country when the law suits start flying. Or will these poor girls just be crushed into silence like so many girls and women are and always have been?

Breasts are part of the sexual stimulation response to orgasm.

Absolutely not flippant, Datun. I thought I was doing the right thing, trying to raise her without oppressive stereotypes, but now it seems that it might lead to all sorts of interventions.

I've a friend transitioning, and honestly I was so upset at his post mastectomy photos. I remember the indie, rather femme, lesbian and I find it hard to see him now. I'm happy he's happy but ... I dunno, just upsets me that he felt it necessary.

gendercritter · 13/09/2018 19:58

This is absolutely horrified me. All those women who are supporting the trans argument and accusing us of being bigots are complicit in this. I include women posting on here

FermatsTheorem · 13/09/2018 20:05

I don't know how you protect a child against ROGD. From talking to parents on here, it comes in all shapes and sizes - previously very pink and fluffy girls who suddenly decide with no warning they're boys, young lesbians struggling with their sexuality, "tomboys" who decide that if they don't fit into society's gendered cages, the problem lies with their bodies rather than society, girls trying to escape from sexual abuse, girls swayed by tumblr, girls swayed by a large cohort of their RL peers doing it, girls with aspergers, girls who would have been anorexic a generation ago...

The scariest conversation I had was with a mother who said her child had always been the sceptical rational kid, right up until the moment they were "got at" on social media (this was in response to me saying DS likes nail varnish, but I'm hoping his innately sceptical nature and strong grounding in how harmful sex stereotypes are will prove some sort of immunising factor).

Maybe I should go at his toe-nails (currently shocking pink) with nail-polish remover. (On the other hand nail polish does seem to be doing a better job of treating his fungal nail infection than the stuff from the chemists...)

God, that worst thing I had to worry about at school was being (correctly) called an overweight nerd. Now, teenage bitching and culture can lead to sterility.

Starkstaring · 13/09/2018 20:21

The mastectomy thing is supposedly because wearing a binder is harmful.
And frankly (and this is clutching straws) slightly better than the unknown and unresearched long term effects of testosterone.

But yes - mostly girls - both trans men and non binaries

AngryAttackKittens · 13/09/2018 20:45

If a hell exists there's a special circle in it for people like Olson, who're riding this wave for notoriety and profit.

Children deserve to be protected until they're old enough to make their own decisions. 13 is not the age at which they should be allowed to do so. Why is everything we know about cognitive development in children being handwaved away if the child claims to be trans? Long term decision making isn't fully up and running until the mid twenties, even 18 would be a bit young to fully comprehend the consequences.

My 14 year old can't be trusted to choose his own underpants let alone plastic surgery.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 13/09/2018 20:51

Signs can appear at a very young age e.g. a child refusing to wear typical clothes of their gender or taking part in non- typical games.

So my sister who would never wear a skirt, insisted on short hair, action man, robots etc really just wanted to be a boy? I loathed dollies - babies freaked me out and I alswys suspected that the baby doll ones might come alive and poke my eyes out (hammer house or horror).

Since when did being a Tomboy make you a tranny who needs surgery and drugs?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 13/09/2018 20:52

Baby dolls not actual babies.

Voice0fReason · 13/09/2018 20:56

This is terrifying. How can the medical profession believe that adolescents can make decisions like this?
Help these girls with their dysphoria and support them through puberty. If they want to transition as adults, they can, but most will not and will go on to live happily as women.

Booom · 13/09/2018 20:58

the problem is pigeonholing gender stereotypes. If as a woman/girl I don't want to conform to societies concept of what being female means I must be male. Not that societal norms don't work for all.

Datun · 13/09/2018 23:41

honeysucklejasmine

I hear you.

Lefthanddown · 14/09/2018 01:01

This is horrendous. I struggle to get my head round the fact that medical bodies and government's are allowing, and effictively promoting, what is a small, if well funded faction, to gain so much ground and power to openly abuse children.

Every time I think surely it can't get worse, something else crops up, and the worse thing is the majority of it isn't hitting the headlines or even getting a mention in main stream news outlets
